Director's Note

I first saw The Prom during its original Broadway run in the winter of 2019. I didn’t know much about the show but was excited to see something original and new. It did not disappoint. After the lights came up, I turned to my friend and said, “When the time comes, I want to direct this show in Baltimore.” It is everything I love in a musical—it’s funny, the music is memorable, there are big dances, and it has a compelling, relevant story. Most importantly this musical has great characters. I am not sure exactly what it says about me, but I know these characters. I love these characters. With all their sarcasm, humor, and ultimately their hearts—these are my people.

Having the opportunity to direct The Prom at Cockpit in Court, with this incredible production team, amazing crew and musicians, and the extraordinary cast of Baltimore theater veterans and wildly talented newcomers, has been pure joy.

As you watch this story unfold, it is my hope you will enjoy the journey from New York to Edgewater and all that follows. When it is over, perhaps you will come to know these characters; love these characters and their unruly hearts just as I do. And when that happens, I suspect they will become your people too!

Sincerely,

Roger Schulman
Director
