Director's Note

When I first landed in Canada (and this was 10 years ago now), my mother and I spoke nearly no English, had no friends, and on what felt like the rainiest evening in Victoria, BC, the company that was supposed to deliver our furniture to our door decided to leave all our stuff in the rain downstairs of an apartment building with no elevators inside. My mother and I had no one to call, no one to ask for help, and the only two options in front of us were either letting the furniture get drenched until the rain stopped the next day or moving it upstairs and soaking ourselves in the process. It was apparent to us the first choice was barely an option.

Two or maybe three hours later, as cerulean distilled the sky, the downpour seemed to have hastened, successfully banishing my mother and me in a place we'd only started to contemplate the idea of home. As my mother and I gathered every last bit of strength in our bodies, we carried the last item—a couch— into our crabby little apartment, where our wet furniture bathed the drab brown non-negotiable carpet that came with the place, and it had dawned on us that we hadn't eaten all day.

The only place that stayed open was a Phở shop down the street called Phởnomenal (ha). Now, I don't really remember what I ordered that night, but I do recall the way the rice noodles parted as the still pinkish meat slowly browned in the soup that now tastes like fondness. Asian food is a funny thing: it's treated as an exotic luxury in our fast-moving modern world, but for Asians, it's the thing that connects us to one another in a way that feels larger than everything else; it's the thing that connects us to our history, our ancestors, their stories and how it manifests into the way we navigate ourselves today.

To be honest, this musical is pretty silly, and Nam Nguyen is a pretty silly guy for writing it, but much like most Asian foods, when you strip away the presentation and the funky flavors, at its core, it is made with a heart that pulses through the complexity of our collective identity, our history, our indifference, and good buddha, is it motherfucking delicious.
