DIRECTOR'S NOTE

In 2019, Cockpit In Court presented Dame Agatha Christie’s play, The Unexpected Guest, in the Cabaret Theatre.  Christie mentions this play only once, and briefly, towards the end of her autobiography (pg 536 of 550 pages, including epilogue), and doesn’t devote even an entire sentence to it:

“Later I was to write a play called The Unexpected Guest, and another* which, though not a success with the public, satisfied me completely.”  (*The play that satisfied her completely was not TUG, it was The Verdict.)  This gave Cockpit the extremely rare opportunity to present an Agatha Christie mystery to which no one knew the answer.

Tonight, in the F. Scott Black Theatre, Cockpit presents the play Christie based on what she considered her most difficult novel to write, and what much of the world considers her masterpiece. The novel itself is the best selling mystery of all time. The play has been produced onstage hundreds of thousands of times, and has been made into at least a dozen films and numerous TV series.

Maybe you know the ending.  Maybe you just think you know the ending.  In any case, it’s not the ending, but the journey that’s most important.

In March of 2020, ATTWN was cast and within a week or so had assembled its crew, ready to begin work on a production that would open in the Cabaret Theatre in July of 2020.  The journey from the usual excitement and anticipation of a Cockpit production in normal times turned into the devastation of cancelling an entire season of shows.  A promise was made to the casts and crews of the five shows that when theatre came back, all would be invited to step back into their roles.   Months passed and then slowly, tentatively, and always with an eye to safety, the decision was made to bring summer theatre back to Cockpit.

ATTWN was notified in March of 2021.  A month of rehearsals on zoom, then in-person rehearsals once a week, then slowly more; masked, tested on the way into the campus, sticker-approved; sadness at losing two cast members and joy at two new additions; sets, lights and costumes completed weeks before the usual tech due date – this has been our journey.

Welcome back to Cockpit In Court!  Your journey - to Soldier Island - is about to begin.

They are grateful to Cockpit in Court for the opportunity and for the warmest welcome they could have asked for.

Jake Stuart (Philip Lombard)

Jake is thrilled to be returning to the Cockpit in Court stage in the first post-pandemic production! Jake has frequented many stages in the Baltimore area. His most recent roles include: Jerry Lukowski (The Full Monty, Tidewater Players), Lt. Sam Weinberg (A Few Good Men, Tidewater Players), Curtis Jackson (Sister Act, Cockpit in Court), John Wilkes Booth (Assassins, Phoenix Festival Theater), Trevor Graydon (Thoroughly Modern Millie, Cockpit in Court), Sammy (The Wedding Singer, Cockpit in Court), Mark (RENT, Phoenix Festival Theater), Tateh (Ragtime, Howard County Arts Collective), and many more. Joshua Michael Smith (Anthony Marston)

Josh is excited to appear in his second Cockpit in Court production! After making his Cockpit debut as Jan Warwick in The Unexpected Guest, he is excited to be back on stage performing. As a classically trained clarinetist with undergraduate degrees in both Music Performance and Music Education from Shepherd University, Smith is no stranger to performing. These performances have included stars such as Patti LaBelle, Renée Fleming, Joshua Bell, and Audra McDonald. In the Fall, Smith will be attending Ohio University as a Master of Music student studying Instrumental Conducting with the hopes of conducting professional ensembles, directing University bands, and/or music directing on Broadway. Favorite past roles of Smith are Jan Warwick in The Unexpected Guest, Tony Kirby in You Can't Take it With You, Narrator in The Apple Tree, and Edna Turnblad in Hairspray.

@Jushbox
Ted Burke (William Blore)

Ted is SO excited to be back on the stage after this pandemic-induced break!! Having started in the theatre at age 17, there haven't been too many times since then that he was without at LEAST one show a year. While Ted has been involved with directing, stage-managing, designing lights, choreographing fight scenes, costuming, and building sets, his passion has always been "treading the boards". Ted is very grateful to Linda for allowing him to be part of our shared vision for ATTWN, and feels extremely humbled to get the opportunity to work with such an amazing cast. Special thanks to TraceyAnn for handling our schedule conflicts, and the ZOOM meetings with a happy and smiley outlook! Most of all, Ted is SUPER thankful to Caye, for allowing him to be away from home so often, helping run lines, and not being bothered about hearing different voices coming out of the computer room...
Thank you for sharing this time with us! Without you, there would be no live theatre.

John Dignam (General MacKenzie)

John last appeared on the F. Scott Black Theatre Mainstage in 2017 as Lieutenant Rooney in Arsenic and  Old Lace  and also appeared on Cockpit's Cabaret stage in 2018 as Milt Fields in Laughter on the 23rd Floor.  Other Baltimore/DC area groups he has worked with prior to the pandemic include Spotlighters Theatre (Moon Over Buffalo), Vagabond Players (And Then There Were None), Just Off Broadway (Rumors), Salem Players (The Royal Family; Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka; Peter Pan; The Trial of the Catonsville Nine), Laurel Mill Playhouse (Arsenic and Old Lace; Loves and Hours; Laughter on the 23rd Floor; It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play), Dundalk Community Theatre (The Graduate), Woodbrook Players (The Mousetrap), Memorial Players (Romulus; The Wizard of Oz), and Stand Up For…Theatre (The Rocky Horror Show;  La Cage Aux Folles). John would like to thank Linda, TraceyAnn, and the entire cast and crew for their support.

Susan K. Liberati (Emily Brent)

Susan has appeared in over forty productions in the Baltimore area and in Pennsylvania. Some roles she has enjoyed are M’Lynn in Steel Magnolias, Lady Thiang in The King and I, Lizzie in The Rainmaker, Babe in The Pajama Game, Elizabeth in The Crucible, and Mrs. Higgins in My Fair Lady. A favorite role here at Cockpit was Mrs. Shinn in The Music Man, as well a variety of other roles. Susan also enjoys “performing” as a math instructor at Harford Community College and teaching piano lessons in her home. She thanks her husband Gino for his support. Susan would like to dedicate her performance to the memory of her father. Without him, she would never have learned the joys of the theatre.

Thom Peters (Sir Lawrence Wargrave)

I am thrilled finally to be performing on the main stage at Cockpit after 12 previous appearances on the Courtyard and Cabaret stages in productions dating back to 1977. My most recent appearance at Cockpit was in The Gazebo in 2016. I have a BA in drama from Loyola College and have also enjoyed performing at Fells Point Corner Theatre and Vagabond Players. I am happily retired from a long career as a technician at WMAR-TV, and I am pleased to be working again with our director Linda Chambers and with the other talented members of this cast.

Joey Hellman (Dr. Armstrong)

Joey returns to Cockpit in Court after having performed in The Secret Garden, Lucky Stiff, High Society, The Foreigner, Curtains, How to Succeed… and Mame (among others). Among the three CCBC campuses, he has directed The Little Foxes, Steel Magnolias (twice), Driving Miss Daisy (twice), Plaza Suite and Butterflies are Free in addition to Agatha Christie’s Go Back for Murder and Towards Zero. He has also worked as backstage dresser and running crew on several other CCBC shows. He is the Administrative Coordinator for the Johns Hopkins’ GYN/OB Residency Program.

Scott Black’s Theatre (where she has directed twice for CCBC’s Academic Theatre: In The Next Room or The Vibrator Play and The Menaechmi Twins).  She has written and is directing a one-woman show about Mother Jones (Let The Fight Go On) with actress Janel Bosies.  Chambers teaches scriptwriting at Carver Center for Arts & Technology, writes short stories and is working on the next part of her fantasy coming of age story, The Swords of Ialmorgia (Parts 1 through 3 are available on Amazon Kindle)
