Director's Notes

My journey with In the Heights begin with the West Coast regional premiere in 2014, an experience that I feel completely changed my life.  I had the unbelievable luck to do the show with an incredibly talented group of artists, many of whom had been in the show - either on tour or on Broadway, who selflessly shared their experiences and knowledge with the rest of us.

Three more visits to Washington Heights followed, each in a different character, each with different groups and theaters, but all serving important lessons and special times with amazing people.

When I heard that one of my home theaters was doing the show, it occurred to me that I wanted to tell the story.  I wanted to share my knowledge of the show, of this story, and of my experiences.  At the time, it had been a while since I directed anything, and it wasn't something I would even have considered as a calling.  Doing my due diligence, I was fortunate enough to serve on the production side of a number of shows over the last year and decided to throw my hat in the ring to helm this ship.

I am incredibly fortunate that the board of the Morgan-Wixson believed in me enough to say yes.

My first plan was to assemble a team of folks who knew more than I did about all the pieces it takes to make a show happen. Trusting in my team, we set off for El Barrio. With a team like I got, my job suddenly became very easy.  When over 800 people submitted to be in this show, casting was an embarrassment of riches and the cast I got is beyond phenomenal, in talent and in spirit.

Storytelling is my forte, and I know this story.  In the Heights is an immigrant story, but it's also a story about home, family, and the love that can bring a community together.  There is nothing more close to my heart than those things.

This journey is just beginning for my cast...although my job is technically done.  I cannot wait to see them bloom and shine and throw their hearts all over that stage for the next four weeks.

Alabanza to this cast, crew, and production team! Alabanza to this story! Alabanza to live theatre, especially the kind that breaks through barriers and actively seeks to build equity through representation.  Alabanza to my family.  Alabanza to each and every one of you.

No pare, sigue! SIGUE!

Bianca Flores (Abuela Claudia)
Bianca is beaming to make her MWT debut and her return to theater. There’s no better way to get back into it than with this show. Not only does it represent a huge part of her beautiful community, it also brings a taste of her east coast roots to the west, which ain’t bad either. Having the opportunity to tell the story of a woman’s journey into a new country and creating a life for herself is an honor and a privilege as it is reminiscent of her own mother’s story. She can not stress enough how much she loves this cast and crew. Once you see the lights go up on that stage, you will too. She has been seen in various ads for companies including Apple, Amazon, AT&T, and Bumble. You can catch her around LA as Mirabel from Encanto. Para mi chimo.
