Director's Notes:

Pride and Prejudice takes place in early 19th century, rural England. But we believe our production has a more modern feel to it.  Author Kate Hamill updated the famous love story by making the language  bold and boisterous. We have added some anachronistic elements through the music, choreography, and some props to make this 200 year old story more accessible to today's viewers.

Lizzy Bennet has disavowed marriage. She despises the idea of the game of matrimony and would much rather mock those who pursue it. Her mother, however, is desperate to get her four daughters married since in 19th century England, property was entailed to the nearest male relative after the father passes. Since Mr. Bennet only has daughters, the Bennet household will go to his cousin, the socially awkward and pompous Mr. Collins. Unless the daughters can secure husbands, the Bennet family will be in dire straits after Mr. Bennet dies. The outspoken Lizzy is determined never to marry despite the mounting pressure from society until she meets the impossibly aggravating Mr. Darcy.

This play has much to do with how we manage shame. We all have vulnerabilities, idiosyncrasies and imperfections. Some of us may be embarrassed, at times, by our families even though we love them. How the characters cope with their imperfections and still attempt to remain true to themselves is the theme of this story.
