From the Producing Artistic Director

When I was 15 years old, my parents came home from a night at the theater, bouncing off the walls with excitement. They had already bought the cast album at intermission, and had purchased tickets for the whole family to go see the show the following weekend.

That show was PURLIE.

To say that it was a seminal moment in my (admittedly young) theatergoing career is an understatement.  I fell in love with the show, the music, the dialogue, the cast and everything about it.  I would save after school job earnings to return to see it a total of four times, no small investment for a teenager, when tickets were a whopping $14 for a single orchestra seat. And it became part of my family lore, quoting lines of dialogue when appropriate, and comparing every other piece of theater to it  (“…it was fantastic.  It wasn’t PURLIE, but it was fantastic..’)

And now, over 50 years later, I have the absolute pleasure of producing this for our audiences.  Part of ATG’s mission is to produce undeservedly neglected classics.  I can think of no better show that needs to be “un-neglected” than this joyful, funny and heartwarming musical by Peter Udell, Gary Geld and the late, great Ossie Davis.

Thank you for being here to experience this joyous production. I hope you end up sharing even a fraction of my affection for PURLIE; if so, you are in for a real treat.

Jim Vagias
