In 1979 - the time when Cal was writing these works -  I made the decision to leave my high school teaching career and embark on a new chapter, moving downtown to work in professional theater. I settled into a tiny apartment adorned with exposed brick and a charming fireplace on Halsted south of Diversey. The new abode was conveniently close to the Belmont rocks, a vibrant hub where endless possibilities unfolded with every passing day.

Preserving Cal's legacy holds deep significance for the individuals on our team who lived through this period. Keeping his words alive is essential. Moreover, there's a profound joy in introducing Cal to a fresh generation of artists – an experience that is, quite simply, priceless. It's about bridging the gap between eras, allowing his spirit to resonate with and inspire a whole new wave of creative minds. In doing so, we ensure that the essence of Cal's contributions continues making a lasting imprint on the artistic landscape.

Am I vain and stupid to think that someone one day far away in the future beyond the year 2000 will read with interest and joy these tales I write of my ecstatic wanderings lost in the miracles of the night?

Cal Yeomans (Playwright)
Cal Yeomans, born June 13, 1938, was an award-winning but overlooked playwright, pivotal in the founding of gay theater. Raised in conservative surroundings, he navigated personal struggles and found solace in theater. Despite joining Theatre La MaMa in the 70s, his bold work faced opposition. Uncompromising and possibly ahead of his time, Yeomans, like Lenny Bruce, died prematurely, leaving critically acclaimed yet controversial plays like Richmond Jim and The Line Forms to the Rear. The AIDS epidemic halted his shows, perceived as encouraging promiscuity. Yeomans' unapologetic approach challenged the Queer American Theatre, making him an unsung hero despite limited fame and emotional struggles. Robert Schanke's biography sheds light on his impactful legacy.
