DIRECTOR'S NOTE

DIRECTOR’S NOTE…

Hello!  My name is Elizabeth Dusek and I am honored to be the director of our 2024 spotlight play, Something Wicked This Way Comes.  When I was researching shows to potentially direct, this play immediately caught my attention, not only because of the story my mom had told me about her watching this movie all alone as a tween (and being terrified), but also the potential to do a more spooky show at OPHS.  I have been blessed to be a part of plays and musicals during my time in high school, but nothing that would be considered fantasy horror, so I felt it would be a nice change and challenge for everyone in the cast and the design teams.

The show is written by Ray Bradbury, the author of the novel made in 1962 and movie script in 1983, so the play is incredibly similar to these two previous mediums, with some slight adaptations for the stage.  Bradbury’s distinct writing style is full of action as well as witty quips, which I, a lover of comedy, quite enjoy.  Tonally, throughout the story we wanted to embrace the fade from comedy to more mystery, as I find genre bending works some of the most interesting to watch and be a part of.

Originally, the story is set in the 1950s in a small town in Illinois, but we chose to adapt it so the play takes place in the early-mid 1980s.  This choice was mostly for fun and to add a different layer to the sets, props, and costuming, and Oak Park has not done a show set in this time period at least in the time I have attended.  To inspire the design teams and cast my amazing assistant director, Addison O’Grady, and I came up with a list of '80s media or shows set in the '80s for people to watch to understand our vision.  These included, The Goonies, The Sandlot, It, The Mighty Ducks, Stranger Things, and of course Something Wicked This Way Comes.  We intentionally put the circus troupe in darker colors to embrace the darker shift when they come to town.  We wanted the set to have very detailed aspects, but ultimately show the emptiness of the town, and how alone the boys and Mr. Halloway are in their trials.

Overall, thank you very much for attending this performance and supporting all of the hardworking people who made this show possible!  Everyone on tech, sets, props, running crew, costumes, cast, and parent volunteers brought this play together, especially Mrs. Schneider, Noah Kratt, and Addison O’Grady.   I cannot express my gratitude enough for the kindness and support I have received over these past four years; it has made such an immeasurable impact on my life.  Enjoy the show!

OPPAA is a community of volunteers committed to promoting and supporting the theatre arts program at OPHS. OPPAA funds the productions through donations and produces the Fall and Spring performances. We provide support in all areas of production, from costumes to sets to concessions to ticket sales and everything in between. OPPAA also provides annual scholarships for performing arts seniors who intend to continue their education in performing arts related fields. ITS Troupe 6074
ITS TROUPE # 6074 "Act well your part; there all the honor lies." The International Thespian Society (ITS) is an internationally recognized honor society for theatre students that promotes and recognizes student excellence in the theatre arts. There are ITS Troupes at high schools and middle schools across the United States and abroad. Students earn membership by participating in productions and accumulating points based on their theatre work. For more information visit schooltheatre.org. Formed in Fall of 2014, our troupe started with just a few enthusiastic theatre kids who had been involved in productions at Oak Park High School. They wanted to expand their theatre experiences and bring more visibility to the community. With the guidance of a couple of dedicated theatre moms, these students chartered Troupe 6074 of The International Thespian Society. As a troupe we aim to raise awareness for the importance of theatre arts and education through philanthropy, promotion, and being a positive community influence. We incorporate unique individualistic qualities to form a unified group that stands for cooperation, compassion, creativity and communication through theatre.
