DIRECTOR'S NOTE

When I first saw this play back in 2013, I left the show angry. I know; that’s not typically what you want to hear before you see a play. But when I investigated why I felt angry, I realized that We Are Proud to Present . . . hits close to home for me.

I have always wanted to make theatre that “says something.” I devoted much of the early part of my career to plays based on true stories. These plays asked burning questions about the state of the world around me. But for so much of that time in my life, I didn’t really think about what stories I had the right to tell. When I asked myself this question, I too often gave myself a pass, and the results weren’t always positive.

The characters in this play are wrestling with these questions of ownership and authenticity. They are young, hungry, well-intentioned, but a bit naïve. Perhaps more than a bit. They have gathered to tell an important true story that is largely ignored – of the trauma done to the Herero people of Namibia between 1884 and 1915. But as they search for their “in” to this content, they encounter difficult questions and dark truths. Do they have the right to tell this story? What is similar between the crimes in our nation’s past and what happened in Namibia? Are the differences too vast to bridge the gap?

Now, I love this play. I hope you do too, but I also know that this play hits people in deeply personal ways. Jackie Sibblies Drury keeps you on your toes. She doesn’t let you get comfortable. So, if you leave angry too, know you aren’t alone.

And however you may feel after the show, know that there will be someone available to facilitate a conversation, so you have the space to share your thoughts.
