 Executive Artistic Director's Note

Welcome,

We are so excited and honored to have you here as a part of community building tonight.  Face Off Theatre was founded in 2015 by 6 black women seeking equity, diversity, and representation. As we progress through our 8th season, we relect on our theme, STRONGER TOGETHER, and what that means to us as artists in the Kalamazoo Community.  What to Send Up When It Goes Down by Aleshea Harris is a collective reckoning around the physical and spiritual deaths of black bodies.  We know that racism is pervasive in our society.  This is nothing new.  However, the loss of ANY human life affects us ALL.  What to Send Up When It Goes Down calls us into ritual together as we honor the lives of those lost.  Discuss. Reflect. Heal.

- Marissa Harrington

Director's Note

Greetings,

What to send up When it goes down is an emotional play. So for this show to be directed by a psychologist was an added bonus. The production is black movement and black energy in black space. To have a space to be authentically black is not always easy, but when it happens, it definitely "goes down". There are 7 individuals that represent blackness in its fullness. We take you on a black ride that you'll never forget. So get ready to launch because we are more than ready to "Send it up".

- Dr. Shea-Lin Shobowale-Benson
