Notes from the Dramaturg

When the movie Xanadu, a roller disco fantasy, came out in 1980, starring Olivia Newton-John fresh from her 1978 triumph Grease, it was deemed one of the worst movies of the year -- truly a "stinkeroo movie." Even the catchy Top-40 soundtrack couldn’t save it.

Fast forward several decades, and the movie, now a cult favorite, has become the inspiration for the 2007 Broadway musical. This Xanadu, which acknowledges the unintentional silliness of the original movie, also pays homage to 1981's mythology epic Clash of the Titans and other films and songs. Please enjoy this "stage adaptation of the inferior cinematic offering!"

Who were the Muses?

According to Greek mythology, the nine Muses (Clio, Melpomene, Polyhymnia, Calliope, Terpsichore, Thalia, Urania, Erato, and Euterpe) were daughters of Zeus and the goddess of memory (in a society where most people couldn’t read, memory was necessary to remember poetry and specialized knowledge). Each Muse was in charge of an aspect of the arts as known to the ancient Greeks: poetry, dance, art, and music. In fact, the words “music” and “museum” are derived from their name. Here in New Orleans, nine streets in the Garden District are named for the Muses, although our pronunciation of Calliope, Melpomene, Euterpe, and Terpsichore have a uniquely New Orleans spin!

Meet the Company

Matthew Butler (Young Danny / Cyclops / Tube / Ensemble )
Matthew B is an aspiring performer, actor, and all-around entertainer. Matthew began his career in theatre early, beginning at the age of 8 as Bud in Terrence McNally’s Mothers and Sons and continuing on to play Zuzu in Thomas M. Sharkey’s It’s A Wonderful Life; Michael Banks in Disney’s Mary Poppins: the Musical; Winthrop in Meredith Willson’s The Music Man, all under the age of 11. His more recent endeavors have consisted of work in STK’s productions of Dennis Kelly’s Matilda and Claudia Haas’s Antigone in Munich as Michael and Fritz respectively. Beyond the limits of the stage, Matthew enjoys acting in film, most recently as Lucas in Zakery Jone’s indie film, Vampire Bud, and singing alongside his older brother as part of Southeastern’s University Chorus under the direction of Amy Wilt Prats. Matthew would like to lovingly thank his mother, his father, his brother, Ms. Jane, and his dear friends for supporting him throughout his journey and especially for laughing at his abundance of mediocre “dad jokes.”
Kameron Callahan (Sonny Malone)
Kameron, a junior at Holy Cross, is excited to return to the STK stage in his 5th year. Kameron has performed in numerous shows at MCA, including Matilda (Mr. Wormwood) and Antigone in Munich (Fritz) and has previously performed with Jefferson Performing Arts, Rail Events Productions, and Holy Cross. Favorite roles include Guys and Dolls (Nathan Detroit), Putnam County Spelling Bee (Leaf Coneybear), and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (Joseph). Thanks to Mrs. Jacobs-Stanley for this great opportunity and the cast and crew for a fun time.

Colleen D’Aquila (Young Woman/Andrews Sister/ Thetis)
Colleen is so excited to be in her 6th MCA show! She would like to thank her family, the, cast, the crew, the production team, and Mrs. Jacobs-Stanley for making this show possible. Xanadu is a creative, fun show that teaches a great lesson: to not let others dictate your path in life. Colleen would like to thank everyone for coming, and she hopes you all enjoy Xanadu!

Emily Ricalde (Choreographer)
Emily Ricalde (Choreographer) is “jumpy as a joey” to see this show come alive in the PAC! As a NOLA native/MCA Alum with many fond memories in STK, this experience has been a wonderful blast from the past. A recent graduate from Northwestern State University, Emily earned her BFA in Dance and BS in Theatre (Musical Theater) in the Spring of 2021. She is currently a Victory Belle at the National WWII Museum, serving as an ambassador of the museum while serenading veterans and active duty military across the country - all in three part harmony! She will be saying goodbye to the 504 in May, as she has recently accepted a contract with Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines as a Lead Vocalist on the Radiance of the Seas. Most recent credits include: Rent (Ensemble) Summer Lyric at Tulane University, Matilda (Choreographer) Mount Carmel Academy, Cabaret (Texas/Dance Captain) Rivertown Theaters, Hello, Dolly! Karl Harrod (Vocal/Orchestra Director )
This is Karl's third production with STK and the most challenging. Retired from St. Charles Parish, Karl works at ENCORE Studio teaching the next generation of Musical Theatre performers. Karl also works at Holy Cross HS, Brother Martin HS, and Rivertown. Congrats on another well done production!
Tiana Le (Assistant Director)
This is Tiana's first show as assistant director and she hopes you enjoy! Her previous STK experience is costume crew in Shakespeare, Ensemble Member in Matilda, and Elsa Understudy in Antigone in Munich. She thanks Mrs. Jacobs-Stanley, Emily Ricalde, and Mr. Karl for bringing the show together and teaching her everything she knows about how to direct a show!
@tiana.hle
Taylor Davis (Stage Manager)
Taylor, class of 23, is super excited/sad/relieved/sad to be stage managing her fifth and last STK production. She would like to thank her parents and Mrs. Jacobs-Stanley for always supporting her and encouraging her to create and follow what she is passionate about. Taylor would also like to wish the cast and crew a big leg breaking (a dangerous joke considering the number of people on wheels in this show.) Taylor knows STK is in good hands with ASM (soon to be SM) Lana Barbe. Thanks for all the memories and can’t wait for ITF this summer!
Amy Gegenheimer (Sound Head/Sound Designer/Board Operator)
Amy Gegenheimer ‘24 is honored to be Sound Head and Sound Designer for STK’s production of Xanadu. After being on stage for 18 productions at St. Philip Neri and 2 at Mt. Carmel’s Summer Drama program, she shifted her focus to Sound. She recently worked on STK’s set design and film crew for “A Simpler Time”, then became Sound Head for STK’s productions of “Shakespeare Lite,” “Matilda,” and “Antigone in Munich.” Amy has worked at Rivertown Theaters as QLab operator for “Matilda,” “Mary Poppins,” and “Raise Your Voice 5.” Amy also won “State Champion in Technical Theater” for Sound Design at the Louisiana Thespian Festival for the second time this past January and got a Superior rating on her Sound IE at ITF this past summer. Amy heads the sound crew, mixes the sound, and creates and queues all sound effects for all STK products. She is excited for the years to come and hopes you enjoy the show.
Gilly Jaunet (Front of House )
Mrs. Jaunet is one of the few members of the creative team who grew up in the era of Xanadu and American Top-40. When she's not hanging out in the PAC, handing out pizza slices and counting chairs, she teaches English here at MCA. She has been a member of the faculty for 16 years and co-chair of the English Department for 12 years. She'd like to thank Kristi Jacobs-Stanley for usually saying yes to her ideas, her husband for eating the same thing for dinner during show weeks, and her parents for playing soundtrack albums during her childhood.
