Directors Note

What is Airness???

This is a question that this show dances around and eventually comes to a fulfilling, if at times rambling definition for. Airness is a state of being, or maybe a state of mind, where you feel free enough from judgment to be your fullest self. To get lost in what you're doing and become consumed by the pure unbridled joy of it.

Sounds simple right? Until you try it. I would wager that most people reading this note right now would not feel comfortable standing in front of a group of strangers, and at the drop of a hat becoming physically and mentally uninhibited while that group of strangers judged you on a point system. Our play addresses this head on. Because it's an obvious thing that before you do something like that, you have to feel comfortable, welcomed, and safe. It requires a community that supports you, lifts you up, and cheers you on.

This show is fun and hilarious, but not for the reasons you might think coming in. We don't make fun of air guitar. We don't poke fun at any group of passionate offbeat or quirky people who do what they do for the love of it. We've talked throughout this production about fandoms, and nerdoms, and niche interests that can make you feel like an outcast when other people don't understand them, but can also make you feel seen when you are among your people. This show is about finding those families and connecting with your people in order to unlock the best version of yourself.

So, Airness is a goal, but one that takes a community that loves you and builds you up. You must feel safe and supported to achieve Airness. You must find your people, and your family. As theatre artists, we understand this and live this truth every time we step on stage, work on a design, or call a show and make a world come to life for an audience. This cast and crew have been that community for each other day in and out. I am so proud of them and the work they have done. So, when you watch this show, it's all Airness, from start to finish. And that freaking rocks.
