Director’s Note

Welcome to Ripon High School Drama Club’s 2021 Fall Play production of Shakespeare’s classic, Much Ado About Nothing!

This is one of Shakespeare’s most engaging romantic comedies. Set in the beautiful Tuscany region of Italy, soldiers returning from war set about wooing the daughters of the governor, eventually falling in love and having not one, but two weddings! Through deceit and lively banter, Hero and Claudio, and Benedict and Beatrice delight the audience in their romantic endeavors.

The Bard does not disappoint in this wonderful play of wits and words. We come time and again to see Shakespeare’s plays because of their timelessness and poetic tempo. We love Shakespeare because his works delight our ears, engage the mind, and make us fall in love with his characters. Performing Shakespeare is no easy task, and it has been a privilege to watch our students take on the challenge of performing Shakespeare’s words with great devotion and humor, bringing his characters to life on the stage. My hope is that our students, as well as all of us, come to appreciate the depth of wit and wisdom gifted to us by the most famous author in the English language.

My many thanks to the production team that brought this show to life: my Co-Director Mrs. Laura Heatley, Costume Director Samantha Schultz, and Auditorium Manager Mr. Jason “Biggie” Mansmith. Special thanks goes to our Music Consultant Mrs. Sandra Polcyn, Preston Schmuhl for writing music for Sigh No More, and Solemn Song, Christian Camarena for recording guitar soundtracks, and RHS alum Daniel Mader for designing the lighting for this show. Patina Vie loaned to us a beautiful garden statue of a lady holding a vessel, which is available for purchase from Patina Vie ($298).

I especially wish to thank my family, Ashley, Ainslie, Ella and Frankie, whom I love dearly, and who graciously let me spend all this time at the Theatre to put together this show.

I hope today’s performance of Much Ado About Nothing will be a romantic delight for your senses, helping you put your worries away, or as the Bard poetically says, “Then sigh not so / But let them go, / And be you blithe and bonny; / Converting all your sounds of woe / Into hey nonny, nonny.”

Mr. Jeffrey Dodson, Director

Scenes

The play opens in the gardens of Leonata, governor of Messina. A messenger arrives with news that the Prince of Aragon, Don Pedro, and his soldiers are returning triumphant from war and will be arriving shortly. Claudio, one of the soldiers upon seeing Leonata’s daughter, Hero, again, realises he loves her. The Prince offers to woo Hero on his friend’s behalf. That night at the masked ball, he will pretend to be Claudio and win her heart.

Donna Jane, the illegitimate sister of Don Pedro, enters, depressed and bitter. Donna Jane’s servant Borachio then enters with news of Claudio’s love for Hero. Donna Jane hates Claudio, and immediately decides to make trouble for him. Connie and Borachio swear to help.

At the masked ball, a plot is hatched by Don Pedro, Claudio, Leonata, and Hero to trick Beatrice and Benedict into falling in love.

Alone in the garden, Benedict speaks of women and love. On seeing Don Pedro, Leonata and Claudio approaching, he hides to avoid Claudio who he calls ‘Monsieur Love’ mockingly. The men are amused to see Benedict hide and begin their trick. They discuss how Beatrice is madly in love with Benedict but too afraid to tell him.  He vows to look for signs of affection and love.

In the orchard, Hero, Margaret and Ursula trick Beatrice as the others have tricked Benedict.   She vows to change her nature, to return Benedict’s love and marry him.

~  15 minute Intermission  ~

Donna Jane’s first attempt to upset Claudio has failed and is now desperate to spoil the wedding.  Borachio knows Hero’s maid, Margaret well, and can be seen with her at Hero’s bedroom window at all hours of the night. If Claudio sees and hears this, he will mistake Margaret for Hero and think Hero is being unfaithful.

Dogberry the Police Chief and Mayor Verges give very muddled instructions to the watch.  He tells them to watch Signor Leonata’s house because it’s busy, due to the wedding.

Benedict comes on primping, obviously in love. asks to speak with Leonata.  Donna Jane sets the trap for Claudio to think that Hero is unfaithful.  Claudio and Don Pedro are duped saying they will publicly shame her.

Drunken Connie & Borachio enter.  Borachio tells his lewd tale.  The Watch overhear everything, they arrest the villains and take them away.

Hero is in her bedchamber, being dressed by Margaret for her wedding. Hero has pre-wedding nerves and chats excitedly about Claudio and being married.

Everyone is gathered for the wedding. As the ceremony starts, Claudio rejects Hero: Hero denies being unfaithful but, when Don Pedro confirms Claudio’s words, she faints. The Friar is convinced of Hero’s innocence and suggests they pretend she is dead until she is proved innocent. Left alone, Beatrice and Benedict admit their love for each other.

Borachio and Connie are brought before the Sexton, The Watch confirms that they overheard Borachio confess his crime.  The Sexton says that Hero has died and Donna Jane has run away.

Antonia tries to comfort Leonata who is devastated by the loss of Hero’s reputation.  Claudio refuses to be sorry and Antonia challenges him so fiercely that even Leonata is surprised. Benedict enters, Claudio and Don Pedro try to joke around with him but Benedict refuses to join in and accuses them of killing an innocent child and challenges Claudio to a duel.  After Benedict leaves, the Watch enters with Borachio who confesses everything, adding that Margaret was innocent. Claudio is full of guilt and begs Leonata for forgiveness. Leonata orders Claudio to mourn Hero at her funeral. Claudio promises to do so and to marry a niece of Leonata's who looks like Hero.

At Hero’s monument, Claudio mourns Hero’s death. Then Don Pedro and Claudio leave to dress for Claudio’s wedding to Hero’s cousin.

Benedict attempts to write a love poem to Beatrice.  When Beatrice arrives, he tells her he has challenged Claudio and is waiting for a response. They tease each other a bit but Benedict stops to ask how she and her cousin are showing how much he cares.  Ursula rushes in with news of Donna Jane’s plot and all three of them leave for Leonata’s house.

Back at Leonata’s house, Margaret’s innocence is established. Leonata tells Hero, Beatrice, Margaret and Ursula to put on veils. In private, Benedict asks Leonata for Beatrice’s hand in marriage and for the Friar to marry them. Don Pedro arrives with Claudio and the veiled women enter. Claudio obediently accepts his unknown bride.  Hero is unmasked and declares her innocence.  She and Claudio are reunited. Beatrice and Benedict realise they have been tricked into loving each other but refuse to admit it in public until Claudio and Hero produce the love sonnets that the two have written to each other. News arrives that Donna Jane has been arrested and dancing begins to celebrate a double wedding.

Meet the Company

Justin Mildebrandt (Benedict, Borachio)

Senior

This is my third and final fall play. I have been so fortunate to work with great casts and I will forever remember these shows as fun, and challenging, but challenge is a good thing. If you know me, I like to keep things fast, and energetic. With this show I had to learn how to slow down to process the Shakespearian language that I somehow memorized, still not sure how I did that :). If you're reading this, I'd like to thank you. It's the never ending support of this community that fuels each and every one of our cast members. Enjoy the show!

Favorite Shakespearian Insult: "More of your conversation would infect my brain" (Coriolanus)

Katie Skoog (Hero, 2nd Watchman)

Senior

I'm a senior in highschool, and I have been in 2 play productions during my high school career. The first one was "The Grimms Brother Spectaculathon '' and this year's production. It has been such a privilege to come full circle, and act alongside some of my closest friends.

Lillian Diane Schram (Leanota )

Senior

I was in the Grimm Spectaculathon as the Frog Prince/Evil Queen, Oklahoma as Laurey, Clue as Scarlett, and Singing in the Rain as Kathy Seldon.

Favorite Shakespearian Insult: “You are a wall-licker.”

He has been in both the "Peter and The Starcatcher" and "A Simpler Time" performances in his time in RHS Theater. He is a fairly soft spoken, yet diligent student at Ripon High School.
