Queens - Woman In White

Historical Notes -- Read here first!

"Divorced, Beheaded, Died, Divorced, Beheaded, Survived" -- this little rhyme is something every schoolchild in England learns to remember the order of Henry VIII's six wives. Henry VIII, King of England from 1509 to 1547, had six wives in a desperate effort to have a son to be heir to the throne -- an effort that resulted in ten children, only 3 of whom survived infancy and only 1 of whom was a boy.

Queens is the moving story of Henry VIII trapped in purgatory, forced to relive his sins against his wives -- over and over again through the centuries. SIX Teen Edition takes this same story and flips it around-- with the queens as pop divas battling it out in a song competition.

Other names, words,  and interesting information:

Church of England (Anglicanism) - church founded by Henry VIII in response to Pope Clement VII’s refusal to grant an annulment to his marriage to Catherine Aragon, Known as the Episcopal Church in America.

Consort - the spouse of a reigning monarch.

The Fool -- the best known court jester of Henry VIII was Will Somer or Sommers.

Hans Holbein - (1497?-1543)  German painter who was considered the greatest portrait painter of the 16th century. Holbein was the official court painter for the Tudor court, and among his subjects were Henry VIII, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleves, Sir Thomas More (later sainted by the Catholic Church), and Prince Edward (later King Edward VI),

All named characters in both shows were real historical figures.

Plantagenets - Two branches of this royal family, the Lancasters and the Yorks, battled over the throne for more than 30 years of civil war, known today as the Wars of the Roses (from the family badges --  the White Rose of the House of York and the Red Rose of the House of Lancaster).  After Henry Tudor (a member of the Lancaster family) defeated Richard III, the last York, he married Elizabeth of York, uniting the two families and combining the two badges into a white and red Tudor Rose symbol.

Margaret Pole -  (1473-1541) last remaining member of the royal Plantagenet family. She was beheaded by order of Henry VIII because her son, the last Archbishop of Canterbury and highest ranking member of the Catholic Church in England, refused to support Henry’s annulment from Catherine of Aragon. The play’s description of her execution is historically accurate.

The Protestant Reformation - a 16th century religious, political, and cultural movement that challenged the authority of the Catholic Church and led to the creation of Protestantism. Martin Luther (1483-1546), a German Catholic priest known as the founder of the Reformation, challenged several of the Church’s practices and was excommunicated by Pope Leo X in 1521.

Richmond Palace - a Tudor royal residence on the Thames River rebuilt in 1487 by Henry VII, father of Henry VIII.

Tower of London - royal castle on the Thames River in central London consisting of several connected towers which has served as a fortress, palace, and royal prison. The White Tower was completed in 1078 and amazingly is still standing. The crown jewels of Britain are housed within the Tower of London.
