LAUGHTER ON THE 23rd FLOOR

Inspired by Simon's youthful experience as a staff writer on Sid Caesar's "Your Show of Shows", this ensemble comedy features all the attendant comic drama as the harried writing staff frantically scrambles to top each other with gags while competing for the attention of star madman Max Prince.

FROM THE DIRECTOR

Dear Friends and Supporters of Mitchell College Performing Arts:

THANK YOU!

Thank you for your presence here in the Clarke Center today, to take in this hysterically funny look into the jaundiced, cynical, hopeful and always optimistic world of 1950s television writing.  While the themes and language are somewhat "earthier" than those of our recent theatrical offerings, "Laughter On the 23rd Floor" is brutally honest, and reflects the author's earliest experiences writing for Sid Caesar's "Show of Shows" in the early 50s.  The characters are certainly brash and bawdy, but as the plot progresses we see that they are also vulnerable and sensitive souls, struggling with the same fears and failures that you and I face every day.

As with any period piece, there is a learning curve with young actors whose life experiences don't include the period in question.  Early in Act I, the character Val proudly declares that the writing staff is the finest writing staff "in the history of television!".  That's only funny when you realize that, in 1953, the history of television only went back about 23 minutes ... and there were a total of only three channels available ... and they were all off the air for six hours every night ...

During our rehearsals, this cast has also learned about the shenanigans of Senator Joseph McCarthy, the significance of Edward R. Murrow, the executions of Ethel and Julius Rosenberg, and the speech characteristics of Marlon Brando.  Gatherings on the Clarke stage are always interesting and informative!

I would be remiss if I didn't express my deepest thanks to the Administration, Faculty and Staff who support our work on the stage in so many varied ways - President Espy, Deans Martinez and Richard, Facilities Director Joe Pardee, and Lou Courey and their entire staff, and the entire Mitchell community for their flexibility in allowing our actors and crew to commit to the many hours required to present our two major shows each academic year.

And finally, my thanks and love to Allison and Oliver, who haven't seen me at home for more than 48 hours at a time in almost a month!

Enjoy the show!

Meet the Company

Tim O'Hayre (Max Prince)
I have had a lead role in every production in my college career so far, and I am looking forward to playing as the outrageous Max Prince in my second-to-last ever show at Mitchell during my senior year. Whatever the future holds in store for me, I feel honored to been a part of the wonderful theater community here at Mitchell College. As a Communications major with a minor in the Performing Arts, I hope to continue my passion for acting beyond graduation, not only for myself, but to serve as a positive influence for others. All that said, we, the cast, hope you enjoy the whimsical Neil Simon masterpiece that is "Laughter on The 23rd Floor", guaranteed to leave you laughing your pants off."
Matt Dougherty (Lucas)
Matthew Dougherty is a Psychology Major and Sociology Minor honors student at Mitchell. He's passionate about his work and is proud to be a part of this semester's production.
Jillian Grossbach (Milt)
Jillian Grossbach is excited to return in her second Mitchell College production and starring in her first main role. She performed in "Iolanthe" as a fairy at Mitchell College last spring. Previously, she has performed as an ensemble member in "Hairspray" and "Mary Poppins". Other roles include Pegasus in "Hercules", Lost Boy #1 in "Peter Pan", and the Dutchess in "Alice in Wonderland". While not at college or performing, Jillian lives in the New York Metropolitan Area with her parents, younger sister, Jenna, and pets, Georgie and Pepper. She enjoys painting, drawing, swimming, watching shows on Netflix or Disney Plus, and baking. Jillian would love to thank Jono and the wonderful cast for all the support.
Maren Harwood (Val)
Maren is excited to be back on the Mitchell College stage in the current production. She has performed in past Mitchell College shows as Senator Jones in "Of Thee I Sing", Chris/Inspector Carter in "The Play That Goes Wrong", and the title role in "Iolanthe". Maren is also a part of the Mitchell College Select Chorus and Voice Studio. Maren has previously performed in different orchestras and choirs but has been able to explore and pursue a passion for theatre since coming to Mitchell. Maren loves singing, playing her instruments, and writing in her free time. She would like to thank Jono, her family, and the cast and crew for supporting her along this journey.
Carly Zimmerman (Brian)
Carly Zimmerman is excited to appear in her first Mitchell College production. Previously, she has performed as Fastrada in "Pippin" and Ms. Ladybug in "James and the Giant Peach". Other roles include Logianne SchwartzandGrubenierre in "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" and as an Angel in "Anything Goes". Carly is from North Carolina, and would like to thank her friends and family, as well as the incredible cast and crew of this production.
Sofia Prada (Carol)
Sofia Prada is an aspiring singer and actor and has been a proud member of the Mitchell College Players and The Select Chorus Ensemble for the past three years. She has studied music theory, stage make-up, devised theater, and individual voice instruction at Mithcell College. Some of her favorite roles include her current role of Carol in Neil Simon’s "Laughter on the 23rd Floor", Phyllis in "Iolanthe", Rose Bailey and Violet Bick from "It’s a Wonderful Life - a Radio Show". Sofia hopes to continue her studies in the performing arts and wishes to work towards making the theatre arts inclusive for all.
Payton Rutherford (Helen)
This is my first official play, and I couldn’t be more excited to be part of Laughter on the 23rd Floor! I’ve been around plays since I was young, but this is my first time really stepping into a role with lines and a full character to explore. Playing Helen has been such a fun and eye-opening experience, and I’ve loved bringing her character to life on stage. Theater has always fascinated me, so finally being part of it in this way feels incredible. I’ve enjoyed every minute, from laughing through rehearsals to connecting with the amazing cast and crew. I’m so thankful for this opportunity, the people I’ve met, and all the memories made along the way!
Harry Bernard (Ira)
Harry Bernard is a junior at Mitchell College. Some of his previous shows at Mitchell include "Iolanthe" (Lord Tolloler), "The Play That Goes Wrong" (Robert), "Of Thee I Sing" (Fulton), "It’s a Wonderful Life" (multiple roles), and "The Fantasticks" (Huck). He hopes you all enjoy the show tonight.
Owen Murphy (Kenny)
Owen has the following to say about his character: "He’s smart, sarcastic, and just optimistic enough to show up every morning to watch the rest of the team slowly lose their minds. When he’s not fixing everyone else’s jokes, he’s busy pretending he’s not part of the same sinking ship. Kenny believes timing is everything especially when it comes to ducking from flying scripts and avoiding Max’s latest meltdown. I guess he's a lot like me ... !"

Morgan Frost (Stage Manager)
As the band, Queen, would sing in their song, “Show Must Go On”, that is exactly what I been growing up with, throughout my entire life as a senior at Mitchell College. I never once stopped believing in myself and never stopped my love of the theatre. It has always been apart of me ever since I was little. I am 100% thrilled to be in this years play, “Laughter on the 23rd Floor” as Stage Manager and will continue to be active in theatre in my next steps in life. I would love to thank my mom and my brother, Ian, for supporting me in being apart of the Performing Arts community and always believing in me and I would also love to thank my Dad for giving me the inspiration to be in the theatre. We are all in this together!
