Director’s Note
It has been an honor to direct and choreograph this young actors’ production of 13: the musical. When I first started working here it was immediately clear that Studio East is a special place. Its community is strong, and I have heard many students and families talk about how much they love it here. That is exactly what theatre should be. A place to feel safe, seen, supported, and respected.
Middle school can be a trying time when students are learning about themselves, trying to fit in, wanting to stand out (but not too much), and navigating peer and societal pressures. 13 is a story that dives right to the good and the bad of being a middle schooler, something that these actors are fully and personally immersed in. The show is full of joy and laughter and has a beautiful message! It also touches on elements of middle school that take a lot of bravery to portray, particularly for students who are having these experiences in their real lives, and I am incredibly proud of them.
We are in a bit of a bubble here in the PNW, and as a theatre community, and some of the topics addressed in 13 are difficult to navigate and are uncomfortable for the students and production team. In the script, some characters use negative, misinformed, judgmental, and derogatory language about disabled people, LGBTQIA+ people, and Jewish people, their religion and culture. Body shaming comments are made about a character’s weight and food choices. While we may not face this kind of language as much in our bubbles, comments like these are unfortunately more common than we’d like to believe, particularly in an area like the show’s fictional Appleton, Indiana. That is why we have chosen to maintain the language of the script; though it was published in 2006 and revised in 2013, the hurtful language is not outdated.
Our hope is that you, our audiences, are aware of your discomfort in these moments of the show and that you soak up the message this story and these students are hoping to share: That we are all learning to become the best versions of ourselves, no matter our age, area, or background. Hatred gets us nowhere; love and acceptance keep us strong. We must explore what we don’t understand, see things from another perspective, and always remember that “we all have a little more homework to do.”
I want to thank you for supporting the Studio East community, youth theatre education, and these tremendous and talented students by coming to see 13: the musical! Enjoy the show!
