Drama Director Linda Bon:

Deep thanks to all our beautiful students who have opened their hearts to this challenge. Thanks to all for supporting our Theatre Arts program and our student poets at Long Beach Polytechnic through ticket purchase, concessions, and snapping your fingers!  Applause should be held until the end of a set.

All poems are original, written by student poets from Long Beach Polytechnic High School.  Most poets were selected out of all the students in their Theatre Arts classroom to compete, using a panel of student judges in their class “Mini-Slam.”  Other Poly students auditioned to perform in this event.

Half of the ticket proceeds tonight will go to the student poets in the form of cash prizes!  Thanks for your generosity in supporting our poets and our drama program.  Donations are welcome for the jazz band!

He grew up in Colorado, graduated from Calvin College (Grand Rapids, Michigan) with a BA in Greek, and earned an MA in Teaching from USC. He enjoys reading and writing poetry and song lyrics, and has published two albums of original music as part of the band Sauni's Big Jump. We want to thank Mr. Holmlund for his 7th year of serving as a Slam judge - That's right - He has judged at EVERY Poetry Slam event!

Gwen Larsen is an English teacher at Long Beach Poly.   She studied acting, literature and education at Yale University and UC Berkeley and acted professionally in Boston and Berkeley before returning to Long Beach to be a mom.  As an avid supporter of Poly's artistic community, she is happy to be a part of Poly Poetry Slam 2022.

Jodi Improta is an actress, director, costumer and set designer.  She was the drama teacher at Whitney High School for over 30 years, where she left a legacy of outstanding high school theatre.  She is the director and producer of the Whitney Performing Arts Camp.
