Director's Notes
Samuel Beckett's Come and Go is a short play (a 'dramaticule') in the Absurdist tradition, exploring memory, secrets, and nostalgia using only one hundred and twenty one words of scripted text. In an otherworldly atmosphere, where time has slowed, and words, movements, and silences repeat incessantly, the viewer is presented with mysteries - what have these women been through together? What whispered secrets are they currently sharing? And do they perhaps even exist at all in the world as we know it? While their whispered revelations may suggest exclusion, their lifelong reliance on each other also reveals the powerful bonds of their intimate community. And their final hand-holding position in the Celtic knot symbol for 'eternity' allows us to imagine their ritual, perhaps all human ritual, continuing long after the lights fade to black in the theater.
