About The Play

This play, “represents six years and literally thousands of conversations about identity, assimilation, hatred, empathy, joke structure, performance, and sign-language gorillas. It was designed to be conversant with the time it was performed in but not beholden to it.”

The first thing to understand about this play is that it was written by a man who does stand-up comedy, and that is just different from being your average playwright. From the outset Edelman recognized that, “It’s about performance. The show is based on this real-life story, but I think it’s made so much better by the fact that there is artistic license, which I’ve always been really comfortable with. Because truly, the curatorial decisions that you make as a comedian are artistic licenses. Your biases, your prejudices, they always show, and examining those is what makes it interesting.”
In the middle of the night, I woke to think that I hope I know how to explain this play to the Capital Stage audience, for Edelman is the man who had this very real experience and because it feels as if he couldn’t help himself. He was in England, working on a radio comedy show which he discusses in great detail in the play you are seeing. As a result, he poked the bear of anti-Semitism which led him in 2017 to enter the belly of the beast in Queens, New York; the end result of which is the seed of this play.
And now for the big difference, enter the comedians with suggestions and critiques. Good stand-up comics are good story tellers, and Edelman is good at both. He worked with his most trusted friend Adam Brace who died before the Broadway opening. They honed and expanded the story and the show. Edelman told the story to, among others, his friend Michael Birbiglia who “has given about 50 notes on the show, and each one of them is the best note you’ve ever heard. It’s like one of the heads of my Mount Rushmore produced my show and then all of the other heads started coming to see it.”
Over time “Steve Martin gave me a tag [for a joke], Stephen Colbert gave me a performance suggestion, and Jerry Seinfeld pointed out something that got a laugh every time but was really a flaw of the show. Billy Crystal gave me the advice to move from a handheld [microphone] to a headset, which I wasn’t sure about because I thought the show would lose its stand-up roots.” Let us face it, it’s just a bit more than a Shakespeare and Marlow discussion. And for the record, he likes to hear from non-comedy folks as well.
But let us leave the last word for now with our nascent playwright. While all this was going on Edelman had finished working as a staff writer on the CBS sitcom The Great Indoors during its 2016–2017 season. Of this experience, he opines that he learned an important lesson, “there is one thing that is really valent between stand-up and show-writing: when writing a show, you really have to service your character no matter what, you can never fail to set up the character, and that’s a great tip for stand-up.”

Writing about a stand-up comedian who is now a first-time playwright presents a few challenges. What information does this writer feel the audience for this production might want to know? Well, I have had a grand time learning about Alex Edelman from any number of interviews and am excited to share some of it with you.
Born in Boston on March 20, 1989, into a Jewish family, his full name is David Yosef Shimon Ben Elazar Reuven Alexander Halevi Edelman. He was raised in an Orthodox Jewish household. You’ll hear ever so much more about this during the course of this performance.
He started trying stand-up as a teenager while at the same time working for the Boston Red Sox. After high school he attended yeshiva in Israel where he helped establish Jerusalem’s first comedy club, Off the Wall Comedy which is still the only comedy club in Israel.
Returning to the United States, he graduated from New York University. As much as I can remember, one doesn’t major in stand-up exactly but there was most definitely an active student comedy community. In his stand-up routines he jokes about “paying $191,000 for an education and discovering that NYU doesn't have a traditional campus.”
Much of Edelman’s work has been informed by his time spent at the Edinburgh Fringe where in his first outing in 2014 he won the “Newcomer Award.” When he returned in 2018, he was asked what it was like coming back to which he replied, “It’s incredible my ‘career,’ with heavy air quotes, started here so to come back with a show that has already gotten awards in Melbourne, it really takes the pressure off a tiny bit. This is the first show I’m excited about performing at the fringe, not petrified.”
While all this was going on he worked as a staff writer on the CBS sitcom The Great Indoors during its 2016–2017 season. Of this experience, Edelman opines that, “there is one thing that is really valent between standup and show-writing: when writing a show, you really have to service your character no matter what, you can never fail to set up the character, and that’s a great tip for standup.”
His journey with the production you are seeing began in 2018 in Melbourne, Australia which is described in more detail in the essay about the play. And if this play leaves you wanting more, Edelman is back at the Fringe this year with new material in a show called “What Are You Going to Do.” It covers more ground, including his time as a hospital clown in Jerusalem and themes like personal responsibility and religious belief — with some amusing asides about how in New York City, “cruelty” is a “love language.”

Greyson Horst^
Greyson Horst is an actor and filmmaker based in Sacramento, CA. After receiving his BFA from NYU Tisch in 2019, Horst directed an award-winning short film, The Bugs and the Slugs, and an independent feature film, Throuple. His live theater credits include MACBETH (Banquo) and HEDDA GABLER (Eilert Lovborg) at Big Idea Theater, where he also directed CASH FLOW as part of the 2026 One Act Festival. Horst is thrilled to be a current Capital Stage Apprentice, and he is honored to be a part of his first production with Capital Stage as understudy to Jack Greenberg.
Alex Edelman
One of the most critically hailed comedians of his generation, Alex Edelman is best known for solo shows that blur the line between his stand-up comedy roots and narrative-driven storytelling. His last offering, JUST FOR US, played more than 500 performances all over the world before premiering as an HBO original comedy special in April of 2024. Along the way, it made award-winning stops in Melbourne, Edinburgh, London, and numerous sold-out runs in New York, where Edelman joined a small group of comedians who have played on Broadway with a three-month stretch at the Hudson Theatre. He has previously won the prestigious Foster’s Best Newcomer prize at the 2014 Edinburgh Fringe Festival for his debut one man show, MILLENNIAL, only the second American ever to have done so and the first since 1997. In 2024, Alex was the recipient of a special Tony Award®, was named to the Time100 list of most influential people, and the HBO telecast of Just For Us won the 2024 Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special.
Beyond his front-of-camera work, Alex was a staff writer on The Great Indoors for CBS, a story editor on Teenage Bounty Hunters for Netflix, and the head writer for Saturday Night Seder, which raised over $3.5 million for the CDC Covid-19 Emergency Relief Fund, and featured talent such as Andy Cohen, Billy Porter, Dan Levy, Fran Drescher, Idina Menzel, Jason Alexander, Rachel Brosnahan, and many more. He has written for outlets such as The Atlantic and The Believer, has written and produced documentaries for the U.S. State Department and ESPN's 30 for 30 series, and spent more than a decade working as a speechwriter for the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Boston Red Sox.
Amy Resnick
Amy Resnick is happy to be back in the director's chair at Capital Stage. Michael Stevenson
Michael Stevenson has served as Capital Stage's Artistic Director since 2015. For Capital Stage, Michael has directed THE SOUND INSIDE, THE LEHMAN TRILOGY, KING JAMES, ARCHDUKE, HEROES OF THE FOURTH TURNING, GLORIA, THE LIFESPAN OF A FACT, ADMISSIONS, THE HUMANS, THE OTHER PLACE, SWEAT, THE THANKSGIVING PLAY, LUNA GALE, STUPID F##KING BIRD, HOW TO USE A KNIFE, DISGRACED, MR. BURNS, IDEATION, CLYBOURNE PARK, MAURITIUS, ERRATICA (World Premiere), and LES LIAISONS DANGEREUSES. He has directed at regional theaters including: B Street Theater, Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival, Orlando Shakespeare Company, Perseverance Theater Company, and Sacramento Theater Company. Liz Gray
Liz Gray holds an MFA in Arts Leadership and a GradCert in NPO & NGO Management (Virginia Tech), a BFA in Theatre (NYU, Tisch), and certifications from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (London) and the Upright Citizens Brigade (NYC). Previously, Liz worked as a strategic planner and capital campaign & endowment designer, accessibility auditor, company manager, community engagement coordinator, and development consultant with arts and nonprofit organizations across the country. She taught accessible communications (Center for Communicating Science) and theatre courses (Virginia Tech & Fort Lewis College). Liz presented her research on arts financial structures at the League of Historic American Theatres’ Conference and facilitated workshops at Rutgers University and with the Society for In Vitro Biology and La Universidad San Francisco de Quito.
Caleb Jones
Caleb is proud to be Capital Stage's Technical Director since the 2023/24 Season. He is new to Sacramento but has worked at the San Diego REPertory theater and with several theaters within Fresno County. This year serves as his 11th year in the field, and he hopes you enjoy our shows. Lots of love to Clarissa and all of his loved ones.
Hailey Bowland
As a recent Capital Stage Apprentice, Hailey is excited to be returning as Capital Stage's new Production Associate. Her passion is for story-telling and creating intimate connections through art and design. She has a BA from UC Davis in Theater and Design. Hailey has assisted in designs for Capital Stage productions including EUREKA DAY and FAT HAM, worked in the UCD Theater Department’s scenic shop as a student Technician, assisted in puppet/creature/prop production for UCD’s SHE KILLS MONSTERS, and continues to look forward to the opportunities provided by the theatrical world. She would like to thank Capital Stage for the opportunity as well as the family and friends who have continued in their support of Hailey's passion for storytelling and the arts. Melissa Jernigan*
Melissa most recently worked at Capital Stage on THE TWO KIDS THAT BLOW SH*T UP, ESPEJOS: CLEAN, FAT HAM, EUREKA DAY, UNSEEN and the world premiere of EVERYTHING BEAUTIFUL HAPPENS AT NIGHT. She has been stage managing at Capital Stage since 2016. Some of her favorites include VIETGONE, THE NETHER, STUPID F##KING BIRD, CLYDE’S and THE HOMBRES. Stephanie Rico Bravo is exceptionally thrilled to be joining Capital Stage for ALEX EDELMAN’S JUST FOR US as ASM but also as a new Apprentice! She recently graduated with a B.A. in Theatre Arts from Sacramento State. Her previous credits include stage managing MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING and acting in THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME (Mrs. Shears/Voice One/Woman on the Train) at Sacramento State. As well as stage managing WILDERNESS at Orange Coast College. She would love to thank her family, her closest friends and her fiancé for always encouraging her to follow her dreams she definitely couldn’t do it without any of them!
Ethan Hollinger
Ethan Hollinger returns for lucky number seven at Capital Stage. This show has only one actor. And yet, the job isn't easier. He serves as Head of Theatrical Design at UC Davis, where he helps students embrace the strange and rewire the grid, sometimes literally. Come see MOTHER ROAD this November! A writer, artist, musician, and advocate, his lighting, sound, and media designs span theatre, dance, opera, concerts, and beyond. Recent work includes THE LEHMAN TRILOGY (Capital Stage), DRACULA: A COMEDY OF TERRORS (B Street), SHE KILLS MONSTERS (UC Davis), and ONCE (Duluth Playhouse). BA: NGU, MFA: Illinois State. Rebecca Redmond
Rebecca Redmond is always happy to be back at Capital Stage where she has designed many productions including ENGLISH, CLYDE’S, SMART PEOPLE, BETWEEN RIVERSIDE AND CRAZY, THE TOTALITARIANS, ANNA KARENINA, MAPLE & VINE. Rebecca earned her MFA in theater from UC Davis and is a professor at Sierra College. Samantha McLean Haas
Samantha has been painting sets for over 15 years in the greater Sacramento area. She’s absolutely thrilled to be joining Capital Stage for her seventh season as Scenic Charge Artist. In addition to Capital Stage, she’s worked at Sacramento City College, Sierra College, California State University Sacramento, University of California Davis, Sacramento Theatre Company, B Street, and Broadway at Music Circus. She is an Adjunct Professor of Theatre Arts at Sierra College, where she teaches scenic painting.
K. Kevyne Baar, PhD
Kevyne is thrilled to be a member of the Capital Stage family as the Resident Dramaturg. Productions include GLORIA, HEROES OF THE FOURTH TURNING, PREDICTOR, ARCHDUKE, NOW CIRCA THEN, EVERYTHING BEAUTIFUL HAPPENS AT NIGHT, KING JAMES, EUREKA DAY and THE SOUND INSIDE. Kevyne also serves as Literary Manager for Capital Stage’s popular new play festival, Playwrights' Revolution. A member of Viola Spolin’s Young Actors’ Company who became an Equity Stage Manager, and then the Field Representative for Actors’ Equity’s Western Regional Office, she returned to school in 2001 to work on a PhD. This led to her being Equity’s archivist at the Tamiment Library/Robert F. Wagner Labor Archives at New York University. Kevyne moved from Brooklyn, NY to Davis, CA in 2015, and in 2019 her book, BROADWAY AND THE BLACKLIST was published.
