Director's Note

American Idiot was one of the first shows I performed in after college and has always held a strong place in my heart. This show is far from a typical musical. In style, it is a two-and-a-half-hour rock opera; in story, it jumps between the lives of three different people, back and forth, and sometimes follows them all in different places at the same time.

What makes this show so moving — and why it was so important to me to do now — is the idea of the constant political theatre we non-consensually have to endure. This show came out in a post-9/11, George Bush era. Sure, iPhones were around, but they were not everywhere. They are now. I look back on this time and miss it. I miss not having to endure the constant rhetoric shoved down my throat — these stupid political circuses over issues I’ve never cared about and that there’s no way they can make me care about. The incessant need to divide people. I’m sick of it. And yet — it works. I think this is the most disturbing and disgusting part of this country and our political system. And it isn’t one side or the other. Both sides suck. They are both useless and do nothing to help anyone but themselves — and now they’re just comfortable being blatant about it.

I feel the same anger and hate in my heart every time Chuck Schumer talks as I do when I see Lindsey Graham flip-flopping. What I want the audience to know is that this show, to me, is not about Democrats vs. Republicans. If Kamala Harris were in office right now, I’d be going after her with the message of the show too.

When I was a kid, I watched 9/11 happen. It was played over and over on the news, at school — it was thrown in my face so often it’s almost all I remember from that year. And it never got any better. America has never been great… and with this current political system, it never will be, no matter who is in power. I am so sick of the empty promises, the leveraging of codifying rights so that the party has something to campaign on, the constant hate and attack of less than 3% of the population — because fear can drive a campaign too.

When I worked in politics, I wanted to make a difference — and what I learned was… I was the minority. People say they want to make a difference but look at what they don’t do: make one. I’m done settling for a president I don’t want to vote for, and I’m done pretending these people don’t just lie and deliver on nothing. I want to be the minority. If this is what politics is in this country, then this country is doomed — and I want to be remembered as the person who spoke up against it, called it what it is, and said: I’m not going to pretend this is working, and I’m not going to settle.

I learned a long time ago, working with presidential candidates and local politicians, that I can’t make change from the inside — I can’t fix problems from within a system that’s so broken — and so I left and learned quickly that I can do more with political art than I ever could in Congress. That’s what this show is to me and means to me. The only clear way to Progress is to question a system that more often than not helps no one.
