Directors Note
Deciding a production is never an easy task. There are so many factors and variables that need to be taken into consideration before attempting any theatrical endeavor. Budgets, cast size, talent, parent volunteers, technical elements, advertising and more. It can all be a bit overwhelming at times.
Then the pandemic came. Sickness all over the world. Families displaced. Supplies limited and shipping stalled. Learning forced online. Broadway shut down, along with any other live form of entertainment. However, though I loathe what has happened to us, it has allowed me to have a moment of clarity. The stress of maintaining the other aspects of a production had almost diminished and I found myself focusing on the simplest of tasks: How can I have my students continue to showcase their creativity?
Bad Auditions by Bad Actors was not my first choice. I debated back and forth between other popular titles and which would serve my students the best. However, once I read the script, I knew right away this was the answer to my question I had. I knew what I could do with it and what our students could create. Each character in this show is very unique. I wanted the students themselves to create something raw and intense and entertaining. Students worked through a series of exercises and challenges to come up with voices, gestures, mannerisms, and everything you'd expect from a fully developed character. My hope is that you see how much dedication went into this production and how each student added to the complexity of their characters. They are the sum of my answer.
I'd like to thank my family for supporting me through my late nights at the computer screen. To my students, you are all wonderful - we still GO THIS! My friends and colleagues, thanks for your kind words. Thank you to my parent volunteers and the BADC Parent's Association for all you have done for the company. To the Bel Air High School Administration, thank you for your continued support. Enjoy the show!
