Director"s Notes
In writing BOUND & BURNED I envisioned Hermes as a reflection of myself and the people I work with. At first, Hermes is convinced he’s on the right side. He carries out his orders without question. He believes that serving those in charge is the same as serving truth. As the story unfolds Hermes sees Prometheus’ suffering and rebelliousness, Io’s pain and sacrifice, and he hears the Mortals raise their voices in defiance in ways that can’t be ignored. This stirs something. Shifts something. His certainty begins to collapse. Hermes begins to wonder if Zeus’ way is really the right way after all.
This is where the play holds a mirror up to our world. How often do we, like Hermes, stay quiet or compliant because we don’t want to be the target, or because it feels safer? Easier? What happens when we finally let ourselves question it? Hermes shows us that change can be one of the hardest things we can ever do. His journey asks each one of us to look inward and ask ourselves if we were in his place would we keep delivering Zeus’ messages or do we dare to carry Prometheus’ fire?
