Playwright Note

BRUSHSTROKE authors note

The Congress for Cultural Freedom was real, and its funding did come through the channels that this play suggests. The military operations mentioned in the play were also real. And that’s where the facts of the play end. The play presents government operatives getting very cozy in the art scene and while there’s no evidence to suggest that, there’s also no evidence to contradict it. So please excuse the flights of fancy as these characters express themselves – as Marvin says, early in the play: “Maybe the whole point is that we form an opinion and then we argue a little and hear each other out and then that’s America?”

Maybe, Marvin.
