Director's Note
Jack DeWolf (playing “Wadsworth”) transferred to Cedar Shoals last school year for his junior year. He came with much community theater experience. He started promoting the idea of choosing Clue for one of our performances shortly after I met him. I love the play Clue; Cedar Theatre did a much shorter, much simpler version years ago. I loved the board game growing up and I love the 1985 movie staring Tim Curry. However, last year we were a drama program that was still slowly crawling out from under the rock of covid. During our lock down period in 20-21, all of my advanced students graduated and there was no one to show the “newbies” how to create theater. After returning from covid, I came to appreciate just how collaborative the learning process is in theater. Older, experienced students understand the vocabulary of theatre, the myriad skills involved in performing and the technical creations, the absolute devotion of heart, body and spirit, the intense work ethic, and the time demand. They demonstrate and teach those things to the younger crew. We did not have that, and I did not feel we were quite ready. But I have worked hard to teach these things to this post-covid group and the students have responded by giving their sincerest efforts. The result: we are ready to tackle a show as demanding of skill and precision as Clue! And so here we are. We have learned things about ourselves: we are tougher and more resiiant than we thought we were. We can do hard things-even when there are disablilities to negotiate. We can become more empathetic and work effectively with others. We can aknowledge stage fright and still step boldly into the spotlight. We can identify what is needed to be successful and just start putting one foot in front of the other to get the job done, knowing that gratification will be long-delayed.
This show would not be where it is without our student leaders, specifically Jack DeWolf and Alys Andrews. And our set would not exist without the construction skills and hard work of Angel Valladares. Not to mention that the technicians you do not see on stage are my new heros! And finally, I am forever grateful to the adults (comprised of former Cedar Theatre students and one former Cedar parent) who have worked so hard behind the scenes for weeks. Thank you, thank you Aly, Cody, Meredyth, Tarishma, and Tyler. Thanks for being here to support us.
