Goethe's Sorcerer's Apprentice delights young and old:
A disobedient sorcerer's apprentice sends a broom to fetch water. The broom obeys, fills bucket after bucket and soon the whole tub. The water rises and rises: The sorcerer's apprentice knows how to make a broom fetch water, but he doesn't know how to stop it again... How glad he is when his master arrives!
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) spent his youth in Frankfurt, moved to Leipzig and Strasbourg during his studies, and from 1771 worked as a lawyer back in his hometown of Frankfurt. In 1775 he was appointed to the court of Weimar, where he remained (with interruptions such as the Italian Journey) until his death. The "theater in medias res", known for its 5-year-long tour of Germany with "The Little Prince", brought "Der Zauberlehrling (The Sorcerer's Apprentice)" to the stage as a significant play in five acts. Based on texts by Goethe from the artist's poems, the Satyros, the Farbenlehre and other plays and writings, a new play was created that tells a possible prehistory of the ballad of the sorcerer's apprentice and, in the end, also leads into the ballad. For the performance, the director and actress Anja Pirling have compiled an extensive program booklet in large format with many pictures from the performance and in-depth texts. The performance can be seen following the Reopening of the CCH in Hamburg, one of the most modern congress centers in Europe then in March 2024.
A play recording is in preparation, as well as a making-of DVD. The play's creation was documented from the first rehearsal to the premiere.
