ABOUT THE PORT TOBACCO PLAYERS
“The Port Tobacco Players is an all-volunteer organization that puts the performing arts within reach of our community by offering quality productions that are entertaining, educational and though provoking. We train, invest in and support the next generation of theatre artists.”
It was in the days following the Second World War, when a weary America turned its eyes toward rebuilding, that the residents of the small but history-laden town of Port Tobacco looked across their town square at the burned rubble of their once-proud courthouse and decided to rebuild. During the winter of 1947, in the drawing room of Stagg Hall, a plan was conceived to raise money to aid the Port Tobacco Restoration Society in returning their town to its former glory. This group of artists, from Port Tobacco and nearby La Plata, set out to bring to the stage entertainment that would earn enough profit to continue their endeavor and provide for their cause. They spent the next twenty years performing in high school auditoriums, court rooms, village green... where anyone who wanted to see a play could do so. Their efforts paid off and the courthouse was restored.
In 1974 they found a new home—an old 1940’s movie theater owned by a local pharmacist was the ideal spot for a new beginning. They evolved into what they are known as today, a cultural staple in Charles County’s historic landscape. In 2002 another page turned in history when they raised the money to purchase and renovate their home. Returning to their roots, they performed on the road for two years before returning to 508 Charles Street in 2005. And in 2010, their home expanded to include a much needed rehearsal hall and space to store and construct costumes in-house.
Today the Port Tobacco Players perform six shows on their main stage and countless road productions with various ENCORE touring companies. The Port Tobacco Players are dedicated to continuing the tradition of providing quality theater to the citizens of Southern Maryland.

Director's Note
My sincere thanks to Port Tobacco Players for welcoming me into their midst to direct this play! I am a new resident in La Plata and a new director for PTP.
The plot of ‘Doubt’ is one that has resonated with me for several years and on many levels.
I grew up in an area of St. Louis County, MO, where the public schools at the time were not quite up to standards. So, my mother (who was a teacher) taught me the basic curriculum at home until I was 8 years old.
My mother taught music at a Catholic facility that was generally an orphan home for girls. The priest who came each day to say daily Mass was aware that I was basically being home schooled.
So, he decided to approach our local parish priest about allowing me to attend the parish school. This was at a time when neither public nor Catholic schools in St. Louis were integrated.
So , in some respects, my school life and that of Donald Muller (the student in ‘Doubt’) are somewhat similar.
Being in the category of ‘the sole minority’ seemed to be my destiny for many years. It was true for high school as well as my college class. It’s just the way it was at the time.
So you may understand why this thought-provoking play has been a favorite of mine for a number of years.
‘Doubt’ involves conflict, a bit of humor, and judgement.
Some plays are fun, delightful, and entertaining, while others have a deep meaning, evoke strong emotions, and encourage its audience to think deeply.
‘Doubt’ fits into the latter category.
When the lights fade at the end of this production, each of you will reach your own conclusion.
Will you have certainty … or will you have doubt?
My sincere thanks for attending this production!

Meet the Company
Alyshia Bradley
Alyshia Bradley is a local 34-year-old actress, author, and singer. She graduated from Coppin State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Urban Arts. She has been involved in local shows such as Rent, Once Upon a Mattress, and You Can’t Take It With You. She’d like to thank God, her husband, the cast, and crew. “It is always a precious honor to create art with dear friends.”
Leilani Friday
Leilani is a graduate of Penn State University’s Engineering Science program and is a life-long lover of the theater. This is Leilani’s fourth production with PTP, but her first time as an actress. Leilani has previously worked on Bye Bye, Birdie as a member of the Sound Crew, Airness as Assistant Producer, and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat as set decorator. Outside of the theater, Leilani coaches gymnastics and enjoys expressing herself creatively through writing and music.
Dav Timmermann
Dav is pretty certain this is not his first show at PTP. In fact, he has little doubt that he’s performed in nearly two dozen shows here going all the way back to Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead (PTP), which opened 30 years ago in May. The last show he was in, The Christians (HBP) had some similar religious overtures, and themes of doubt, shaken faith, and an errant voice in the church. He’s looking forward to having fewer lines this time around though. He wants to thank his family, especially Erin and Elora for their love, support, and even joining the crew.
Andrea Watkins
Andrea became slightly hooked on theatre many moons ago when she opened Count Dracula at Lackey High School with a blood-curdling scream. Since then, favorite roles include Myra in Deathtrap (PTP 1993), Dr. Martha Livingstone in Agnes of God (CCCC 1994), Maggie in Lend Me a Tenor (PTP 1995), Brooke/Vickie in Noises Off (PTP 1996), Kate in Brighton Beach Memoirs (PTP 1997), Regina in Little Foxes (CCCC 1998), Maggie in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (PTP 1999), Thelma in ‘night, Mother (HBP 2000), and Grace in The Westing Game (PTP 2015 ). She thanks the production team, especially Director Nada Vaughn, for her devotion to the show, and thanks Clara and George for their patience and love. “xo”.
