‘Eggs: Countdown to Nowruz’ (or just 'Eggs' for short!) is a comedic drama about Nowruz, the Persian New Year. This exciting production is produced and written by Sahar Yousefi and Edward Mulryne, who also star in the piece. The play is a two-hander, set in the UK, that takes place over the course of a single night. Shaparak, a Persian-American and Eamon, an Irish-Brit, are eagerly awaiting the Spring Equinox, which marks the start of the Persian festival of Nowruz. At the exact moment of the Equinox, they plan to Facetime Shaparak’s mother who lives in California. The couple spend the night confronting cultural differences, critiquing society’s attitudes towards immigrants and debating the merits and flaws of George of the Jungle 2.

‘Eggs’ started life as a 10-minute short play, presented at the Old Rep Theatre in Birmingham, UK, after winning a place in Untamed Productions’ Write Away Festival. The script was then expanded into an hourlong play and entered into various competitions before being adapted into a radio play. ‘Eggs the Radio Play’ premiered on Spotify, presented by The Other Theatre Company, with the first episode airing on March 20, 2025 to coincide with the beginning of Nowruz. Subsequent episodes were released weekly, concluding with a finale on May 1st which coincided with the Celtic festival of Beltane. While the radio play was being developed, Sahar and Edward found out they had won the Hollywood Fringe Scholarship Award, which gave them the opportunity to produce ‘Eggs’ as a full production at the Hollywood Fringe Festival. The performances at the Hollywood Fringe will mark the live world premiere of the expanded version of ‘Eggs’.

Our Intention

With this show, we wanted to create a story and characters that get to experience love, humor, and normalcy outside the confines of popular western tropes; stereotypes that focus on violence, war, terrorism, and othering imposed on us via occupation and exploitation of our lands; actions that continue to this day through anti-immigration policies, terrorism charges, and genocides. We hope that the show goes some way to shattering these harmful stereotypes. We also hope that the show is a fun, accessible evening of theatre that tackles big themes without being all 'doom and gloom'.

Biography

Sahar Yousefi and Edward Mulryne met as acting students studying at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire in Birmingham, UK. They collaborated on numerous projects as students and carried on their creative relationship after graduating. They have produced and performed work in the US and the UK across a variety of media including stage, film and commercials. ‘Eggs’ is their first original play collaboration and is inspired by their real-life experiences as people from immigrant backgrounds.
