Why Boudoir?
Joy Wood

What is empowerment? What does it have to do with boudoir photography? What does it mean for women?

“I’ve spent my whole life hiding parts of my body. The shoot was to reverse my insecurities."

What does it mean to be a woman? It is not a body part or a letter on a driver's license. For some, it is a gift that is embraced. For others, it is a box they feel forced into. We spend our lives asking ourselves, "Who am I?" and we must try, along the way, to fall in love with that person, even while we are still getting to know them.

“We haven’t been intimate yet, this will be a great teaser for our wedding night.”

We try things on. We try on clothes, careers, relationships, and we see what fits - and what doesn't. We learn what makes us feel powerful, and all the while we watch the women around us. They are learning too, and their paths are different than ours. What makes one person - one woman - feel empowered is not the right fit for another. We learn that this is okay.

“I’m competing in a fitness competition and have never looked stronger.”

Empowerment comes in many forms. Some find empowerment in expressions of sexuality. Some find empowerment in modesty. Some find it in their families, others in their careers (some in both - others neither).

“I’ve had four babies. I wanted to document those tiger stripes.”

Empowerment is not derived from any one of these things. It comes from the freedom and the confidence to choose what empowers you. To make the choice of when and how and if you want to share yourself with the world.

“Because I didn’t feel feminine. I wanted to feel like a model and move like a woman.”

The statements quoted here answer the question "Why did you choose a boudoir photoshoot?" as asked to clients of Crystal Madsen, Spokane photographer and Executive Producer of Empower. These women have chosen boudoir as a medium through which to unveil their power. Some of these women have graciously given their permission for their photos to be used as the inspiration for the ten works in this production. On behalf of Stage Left, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to each of them.

“Because I’m a 55-year-old vibrant and loving woman who loves all of me! I wanted a tangible piece of me!”

This production seeks not to define empowerment for any one person. What we bring you is a collection of stories; stories about women, in all their beauty, in all their imperfection, in all their glorious humanity. We hope these stories will start conversations, prompt questions, and provoke thought. We hope they will encourage you to reflect not on how we define empowerment, but how you define it for yourself.
