About The Play
by K. Kevyne Baar, PhD
“Write about your experiences! When I moved to L.A., I didn't have any friends, and the office janitor was the person who I saw the most. He would always come in at around 10:00 P.M., and I would still be at my desk, so I wrote a play about a first-year TV writer and the friendship that she developed with the janitor. Our stories matter.” – Tanya Saracho
We have learned and then relearned the idea that it’s hard to imagine you can be it if you can’t see it. Over time this has come to include sex, race, religion, and gender identity among others. In both our last production, American Fast, and in the current one you are seeing today, another question of identity comes to mind: does a woman need to be irritatingly strong in order to succeed in the way we define feminine success? How do we see the role she is now trying to play? For playwright Kareem Fahmy it was a woman of ambition being tested by religion and how it is affected by that ambition. In FADE by Tanya Saracho, it is the idea that her lead character is only a diversity hire to meet an unstated quota, a role Saracho has played herself. Once again we see a character challenged by ambition.
It is night when we first meet Lucia as she enters her “new” writer’s office in the writers’ building of an unnamed studio. She is described by the playwright as “Late twenties, Mexican-born, acculturated. When in Mexico one would call her a “fresa,” but here, she’s just an Americanized Mexican who navigates the code-switching between Spanish and English as well as the rest of her (globalized) generation.” She is college educated with few street smarts which becomes clear as the play proceeds. Trying to place a large-framed poster on a high shelf, it comes crashing down forcing her to call out for the janitor who has been heard vacuuming down the hall.
Enter Abel, “Early thirties, born in the U.S., Mexican American but quite Mexicanized. Born and raised in LA, proud of his Mexican heritage. Got a little bit of a chip on his shoulder.” With little in common save for their mutual heritage, the play moves forward as Abel becomes the only person Lucia can really talk to/complain to as she does when she explains to him that the “all-male, all-white writing staff sees her merely as a token and her boss sees her as a translator for when he needs to scold his Latina maid.” Lucia’s growth in the role of television writer changes over the course of the play, as does her need for Abel’s attention and understanding as well as his knowledge of a different way of being Mexican.
One of the more interesting, albeit surprising, aspects of this play comes as the author sends her audience into the world of Spanglish/Espangles. As Saracho explains it, “I have 16 plays, and we don't ever do subtitles. You can't do subtitles in the theater, so I was like, 'I'm not gonna do subtitles.' You'll never lose the story. There might be a little joke that you might miss, but you'll never miss the story, even in the Spanglish of it.”
Who we are and who gets to tell our story has become one of the defining challenges for theatres around the country. The theme for this year’s Capital Stage season is “True Identity,” and the work this season has made all of us look closer at how we define that identity. How wonderful it is that we get to share this experience together.
About The Playwright
by K. Kevyne Baar, PhD
“We came together because we realized that the stories and experiences of Latina/Hispana women were undervalued and underrepresented not only on the Chicago stage, but beyond. We were also concerned that the few parts written for Latina women often went to non-Latina actresses. We felt that we had to do something.” – Tanya Saracho
In FADE, we have the great good fortune that Capital Stage is once again presenting an award-winning playwright who has dedicated a career to not only writing interesting, entertaining, and challenging works for the theatre, but in doing so, also represents and supports that culture through word and deed. If this sounds familiar, the biography of this playwright, Tanya Saracho, is showing us her culture in much the same way as Kareen Fahmy chose to do it in our last production, AMERICAN FAST.
Born in Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico, Tanya Saracho spent most of her childhood commuting between Reynosa, Tamaulipas where her father lived, and across the border in McAllen, Texas where she and her mother chose to reside. Middle and high school were in McAllen followed by a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Boston University.
In 1998, she moved to Chicago to be an actress, but found that opportunities for a Latina were limited. In 2000 she joined with Coya Paz to form Teatro Luna whose original ensemble consisted of ten Latina women from diverse backgrounds. Ten years later, after numerous productions and awards, she left the group to focus on her playwrighting. At the same time, and once again similar to Fahmy, she co-founded The Alliance of Latinx Theater Artists (ALTA) of Chicago described as “a service organization dedicated to furthering the Chicago Latinx Theater movement by promoting, educating, representing, and unifying Latinx-identified artists and their allies.”
By the next year, Saracho found herself the resident playwright emeritus at Chicago Dramatists, resident playwright at Teatro Vista, and a Goodman Theatre Fellow. Her numerous awards include being named the Best New Playwright by Chicago Magazine, one of the nine national Luminarios by Café magazine, and received the first Revolucionario award in theater by the National Museum of Mexican Art. She also won the Goodman Theatre's Ofner Prize, a 3Arts Artists Award, and a National Endowment for the Arts Distinguished New Play Development Project Grant with About Face Theater. In 2019, she was presented with the Final Draft New Voice Award for Television, and the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Comedy Series for VIDA. In honor of the 50th anniversary of the first LGBTQ Pride Parade, Queerty named Saracho among the fifty heroes “leading the nation toward equality, acceptance, and dignity for all people.”
In 2012, she made the leap to television which it seems also informs her plays such as this one. As she tells it, “No one guided me through it, but here is how it happened: I was in New York doing a play, and an agent got in touch with me and said he wanted to take me out for lunch. In the theatre, they never want to take you out for lunch, so I thought, 'Yes!' I went, I ordered steak, and he told me he thought I should write for TV.” She has written for Devious Maids, HBO’s Girls and Looking as well as ABC’s How to Get Away with Murder. For Saracho, “When you change media, perception is changed and then policy is changed.”
