Director’s Note
This piece ain’t easy — and it wasn’t meant to be.
For Colored Girls is truth, memory, pain, love, and survival living in our bodies.
Every word, every step, every breath on this stage comes from lived experience — ours, yours, somebody you know.
We didn’t polish the hurt. We honored it.
We didn’t soften the message. We trusted the audience.
If something in this show shakes you, sit with it.
If it heals you, take that with you.
And if it reminds you that Black women are still standing — then we did our job.
— CJ Williams, Director

Asia Robinson
Asia is honored to be working with The Chocolate Box once again on the production For Colored Girls. She has been performing since the age of 8. After graduating from Wayne State University with a BSBA in August 2025, she decided to jump back into her passion for telling powerful stories on screen and stage.
Danae Ross

She rediscovered her love of theatre playing Lysistrata in the classical Greek comedy, Lysistrata, in the Fall 2024 Detroit Repertory Theater Actors’ Workshop Showcase. Danae earned her B.A. in Sociology and English Honors from Wayne State University and her M.S.W. as well as her M.A. in Sociology from the University of Michigan. Danae is also certified in various healing modalities, including as a yoga instructor, a doula, and a mental health practitioner with specialized training in providing care to Black birthing people and their families during the postpartum period. She is looking forward to continuing to bring the stories of Black women to the stage in the Spring of 2026 in the Michigan Premier of Danai Gurira's Eclipsed during Season 69 at the Detroit Repertory Theatre.
Kayla Raine
This is Kayla’s first production, and she is super excited to perform after finally getting on stage for the first time this year. It feels like a long imagined dream finally making ground. Kayla love’s the team and how hard and present everyone is and involved. This is how it’s supposed to be, how it’s supposed to feel. Can’t wait for people to see our hard work.

Sonya is excited to return to live theater in this innovative production of For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow Is Enuf, a poetry collection that has been close to her heart since she was in high school. Previously, she performed in Diva Daughters Dupree and Sophisticated Ladies with Plowshares Theater Company. In recent years, she has had a renewed interest in theater, fueled by attending the acting workshops at the Detroit Repertory Theater. For the many years between her theater appearances, Sonya has always found time to sing. She is a classically trained vocalist who has experience in musical theater, jazz ensembles, and sacred music. Sonya earned her B.A. in Music Therapy and M.S. in Audiology from Wayne State University. She has served the Deaf and Hard of Hearing students in Detroit as an Educational Audiologist for over 30 years. This cast has become more than collaborators — they are sisters. And this play, more than a performance — it’s a calling.
