Artistic Director's Note
Message from the Artistic Director & Director
On the road to Hadestown, imagine two trains running on the same long stretch of track—parallel, intertwined, but destined to meet.
Orpheus’s train races toward the future—bright, musical, fueled by the way the world could be. It’s a locomotive of hope and possibility.
Eurydice’s train moves the other way—weathered, cautious, built from the world the way it was. It runs on realism and survival.
But the journey into Hadestown twists the rails. Orpheus’s train comes out bruised, its optimism dented by the weight of the world. Eurydice’s train, traveling through the darkness, begins to pick up a faint glow of hope—sparked by what Orpheus sees in her.
By the time they head back up the track, their trains have switched directions: Orpheus is more grounded, Eurydice more hopeful. Two trains, changed by the road to Hadestown—passing each other not as opposites, but as reflections.
As stories pass through time, we reflect, learn, and tell them again. Hadestown is honest with us: the ending won’t always be happy. But even in its darkest moments, it sparks a flame of hope—a reminder that in tragedy there is still beauty, resilience, and the call to keep trying.
This is why we tell the story again, and why we gather together in the theatre. You are in good hands this evening with our remarkable company of young artists—the dreamers of tomorrow. They show us that being an engaged artist means responding to the world around you, standing up for the people you love, and speaking truth to power.
We raise our cups to them.
