About the Production
It's been a year since we were last able to show movies at The Kraken Theatre. Which also means it’s been a year since the theatre had any money coming in to cover our licencing costs. We’ve hosted many rounds of Virtual Trivia, we did a lip sync video to help out the Pender Islands Community Hall, but other than that we’ve basically watched movies at home, very much missing providing entertainment to our community and especially to our regular movie-goers. We decided to take matters into our own hands and do something creative that would provide entertainment for our community, friends, and family, and that also let us stay connected virtually with friends across British Columbia since we roped 12 of them into playing the 18 different roles in this production. The theatrical world has given us so many friends over the years, 6 of us in this production met in high school and worked on shows together 25 years ago, we continue to be best friends even if some of them have children and insanely dull day jobs. The other large contingent of the cast is made up of Penderites, people who we've met since moving to Pender Island 3.5 years ago, some who have been on stage in Solstice Theatre Society productions, others who have been on stage because they have been given the impression that they are funny or something. Regardless of experience, everyone in this production is hilarious, even those who had never used Zoom before, so we hope that it helps you beat the COVID blues.
Heartfelt blathering aside, it should be noted that this show had minimal rehearsal calls, and each scene was recorded in a single take in order to keep it as much like a stage production as possible (and due to the very limited video editing skills of the production crew), since the very limited bandwidith of Pender Island internet would not make a true "live" streamed performance a viable option
The Play and the Setting
In a world where many are working from home, the setting is that new other-worldly realm we are now all too familiar with, Zoom. The callers, many who have far too much time on their hands, are located in various places, and the help desk staff are doing their best (or are they?) as they field video-enabled calls from their office, bedroom, basement, you name it, anything is possible on planet Zoom.
