In Bloom: A Journey from Dreaming to Believing is an intimate cabaret evening shaped by reflection, musical craftsmanship, and emotional clarity. Drawing from Golden Age Broadway, contemporary musical theatre, and film, the program traces a young woman’s inner journey - from innocence and longing through love, ambition, and self-discovery, arriving finally at belief.
Presented in the tradition exemplified by Feinstein’s, this concert places storytelling and musicianship at its center. Silicon Valley Shakespeare's Immersive A CHRISTMAS CAROL to Return to Montalvo Arts
Silicon Valley Shakespeare will return to Montalvo Arts Center in Saratoga with its spellbinding and roving production of A Christmas Carol, promising to bring joy and festive cheer to audiences of all ages.
"We are incredibly excited to go back to the Montalvo Arts Center for a second year," said SVS Executive Director Annalisa Tkacheff. "Our production of A Christmas Carol has become a beloved tradition for us and SVS patrons alike. The power and draw of the Dickensian classic are evidenced by the return of artists who join SVS anew this season and SVS supporters who plan to see the show for a third consecutive year-assuming they can snag a ticket!"
This unique staging of A Christmas Carol, adapted by South Bay Area's celebrated theatre artist, Richard Orlando, takes audiences back in time with Scrooge as he travels through space and time in a truly immersive way, with stops through the national historical landmark "Villa Montalvo," the John McLaren-designed gardens and grounds, and other special nooks and crannies not ordinarily available for public access.
"Montalvo is so excited to bring Silicon Valley Shakespeare back for another year of this wonderfully creative production," said Montalvo Arts Center Executive Director Angela McConnell. "Our board and donors are so supportive of this important and lovely partnership!"
The production stars Kyle Smith as Ebenezer Scrooge, celebrating his third year in the role. Joining him are Sydney Harmon, Ariana Yasmine Khan, Tonya Mara, Guillermo Morales, Erin Southard, Alika Spencer, and Alliana Lili Yang, all returning to reprise and shine as new characters. Jeff Kramer-founder of ComedySportz San Jose-will portray the iconic Marley for a second year.
The 2022 and 2023 runs of A Christmas Carol sold out before opening night, so audiences are encouraged to buy tickets early, available now at svshakespeare.org/carol. SVS' production of A Christmas Carol is directed by SVS Artistic Director Angie Higgins and SVS Resident Dramaturg Doll Piccotto.

Review: BEN JONES - TEMPTATION at Feinstein's At The Nikko
Ben Jones, award-winning singer, comedian, storyteller, and actor returned to the intimate Feinstein’s at the Nikko for an extremely successful two-run engagement displaying his considerable talents. If you haven’t seen Ben Jones, make it a must. He has that unique skill that makes a great entertainer – he’s so engaging and interesting that you can’t wait for the next moment. This show, titled ‘Temptation’, exhibits that proficiency brilliantly.
Opening with a query, Jones asks “What do you want? He means out of life and the set is an eclectic selection of tunes exploring different alliteration of that theme. Our obsession with cell phones is connected to Jay Hawkins and Herb Slotkin’s “I Put a Spell on You.” Another tempting distraction is represented in “Me and Mrs. Jones,” about two people cheating on their significant others. Jones’ banter is witty and charming, riffing on the fact that his wife Julie Scelzo didn’t take his name, so the song is really about him and his mother! Oedipus and Freud are part of a very funny talking bit.

Jones has been successfully collaborating with arranger/musical director Ron Abel, evidenced on Abel’s stunning arrangement of Cole Porter’s “It’s Alright with Me.” Ben’s sharp tenor covers a number of genres from pop, rock, Broadway, and R&B. His voice is soulful on “Tennessee Whiskey” (Dean Dillon and Linda Hargrove), and powerful on Andrew Lippa’s “What is it About Her? from The Wild Party.
“What Do I Need with Love” (Jeanine Tesori and Dick Scanlan) from Thoroughly Modern Millie is a heartfelt tribute to the late Gavin Creel and a stark cover of Jason Robert Brown’s “Proof” from the new musical The Connector display’s Jones’ serious vocal talent. He’s no stranger to musical theatre, having performed principal roles in L’Enfant et Les Sortilèges (La Théière, Le Petit Vieillard, La Rainette), Boris Godunov (Missail), Candide (Governor, Vanderdendur), Guys and Dolls (Sky), Follies (Buddy), Show Boat (Ravenal), Thoroughly Modern Millie (Jimmy), Cats (Munkustrap/Quaxo), Sweeney Todd (Tobias), The Last Five Years (Jamie) and Chicago (Mary Sunshine).

His smart talking points tie the show together brilliantly, drawing the audience into the theme of our various tempting distractions. He says, “it takes work to keep the dream alive.” One of those dreams is finding love and Alan Menken and Glenn Slater’s “One of the Great Ones” from A Bronx Tale is a show highlight, full of tenderness and delicacy. Temptation is a well-crafted, excellently performed show highlighting Jones’ many talents and adding to his already stellar resume.
Next up at Feisntein's at the Nikko is the always fabulous Lucie Arnaz with her new show "I Got The Job, Songs From My Musical Past" on October 30th and November 1st.

BWW Review: Betty Buckley And Christian Jacob Take the Stage at Feinstein's At The Nikko

Betty Buckley is in a league all by herself, perhaps the greatest interpreter of a lyric performing today. Fresh off her smash eight-night engagement at Joe's Pub in NYC, Betty transfixed her fans at Feinstein's with an eclectic selection of tunes, each becoming indelibly her own. Backed by the lyrical soft touch of arranger Christian Jacob on piano, Buckley wove a captivating spell with tender songs of love found, lost, or desired.
Opening with John Prine's poignant poetry in "Angel from Montgomery," Buckley segues into Sondheim's "Not a Day Goes By," a song of loss and she rips your heart out. There's little flash in her presentations, but she can emphasize a moment with a perfectly timed increase in volume. Her decades of acting experience allows her to delve deep into each lyric and inhabit the character's skin with total authenticity. She interprets Dylan's separation song "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright" from the female perspective and also makes you cry with Johnny Mandel's "Where Do You Start?" with haunting lyrics by Alan and the late Marilyn Bergman.
Buckley would step backstage to allow Jacob room to shine, then calmly grab her mic to deliver a sublime version of Sting's "Fragile, a tribute to Ben Linder, an American civil engineer who was killed by the Contras in 1987 while working on a hydroelectric project in Nicaragua. Two numbers from Buckley's friend composer Jason Robert Brown highlights her remarkable choice of material. "Hope," written after the 2016 election, speaks to inner strength and optimism in the face of overwhelming futility. When she sings "Fear never wins," we believe her with all our might. "Love Again" tells the story of a woman of a certain age uncertain about falling in love with a younger man. Buckley joked that she'd have no issue with this but had to inhabit this woman's fear and trepidation and Buckley sold us on it.
Her newest CD, Betty Buckley Sings Stephen Sondheim is a tribute - song's she's covered previously and new challenges. She closed the set with "No More" from Into the Woods, a song of questioning and weariness. You can run from your issues, but the lyrics state: "Running away- go to it. Where did you have in mind? Have to take care: Unless there's a "where," You'll only be wandering blind. Just more questions. Different kind."
Buckley has stayed the course over the years, weathering through life's joy and turmoil. The truth and honesty in Buckley's voice is centering and consistently focused, no meandering, excesses, or frills. It pierces the soul and stirs you deeply in places perhaps untouched.
