Message from the Artistic Director

There are a handful of “special shows” in musical theatre, and Into the Woods is one of them. It transforms the fairy-tale figures we think we know, using stories passed down through generations to explore deeply adult truths.

At its core, Into the Woods is a fantasy about reality—about the stories, desires, and behaviors we inherit. Act I reveals the lengths we go to in pursuit of our wishes; Act II asks us to confront the consequences of those desires. How do these characters disrupt the natural order to get what they want - and what must they sacrifice to restore balance?

At Mainstage Theatre Company, we value community, and this story reminds us why. When faced with forces too large to overcome alone, it is only through collective responsibility and action that resolution becomes possible.

As the adults leading this next generation the world’s leaders, we must be mindful of the stories we pass on to the next generation, because children will listen. Our wishes, like our children, have the power to shape not only our own lives but the lives of others. When fueled by fear, pride, or deceit, those wishes can grow beyond our control. And perhaps the most dangerous mistake of all is the belief that we are alone.

Enjoy our journey into the woods and may we return more wiser and mindful that our actions have consequences.

Director's Note

Message from the Director

Welcome to the Woods!

Since its 1987 debut, Into the Woods has stood as a titan of the American Musical Theatre—not merely for its technical brilliance, but for its profound understanding of the human condition. In this production, we have chosen a traditional setting to allow the raw honesty of Stephen Sondheim’s lyrics and James Lapine’s book to take centre stage.
The "Woods" remain the ultimate metaphor for the unknown. In Act I, we indulge in the comfort of the "Once Upon a Time” nostalgia that raised us, where wit and magic govern the path. But Act II demands accountability. It asks, what happens after the wish comes true? It serves as a reminder that our wishes do not exist in a vacuum; they ripple through our community, sometimes with devastating consequences.
As we navigate an era of increasing fragmentation, the central theme of this masterpiece feels more urgent than ever. We are reminded that individual ambition finds its ultimate purpose in collective well-being. The Giant is not just a monster from the sky; she is the manifestation of the consequences we inherit when we ignore our responsibilities to one another.
With a young cast at the helm, our “woods" transform into a vivid, untamed reflection of adolescence itself. The stage becomes a place of trial and metamorphosis. It serves as a powerful reminder that every choice made in the moment ripples into the future.  As they navigate their choices, they are forced to face the lasting legacy left in the clearing.
Ultimately, we find that while the woods may be dark and the path often lost, the most "happily ever after" truth we possess is that No One Is Alone.
Thank you for supporting youth theatre and for joining us on this journey.
Once Upon a Time...
