Thank you for joining us for our third annual Alumni & Community Theater event at Indian Creek School!

Before we tell you about Into the Woods, we'd like to mention the people we were lucky enough to work and play with over the past several weeks.  This cast and crew clarified for us what not only "community" means, but also what Indian Creek means.  Some of them hadn't been on campus for over a decade until the stage came calling, and another just graduated in May and is about to tackle the world for the first time.  Some are faculty, some are friends, some are alumni, some are parents, and some are a little bit of each.  Regardless of where they are in their journeys, they are all proud to be part of the this production.  Add to that a powerhouse creative team, we have some top-notch Creek synergy happening.

Watching them all converse, laugh, dance, play, and hang out for hours on end has been pure joy.  They are such individuals, but all of them perfectly represent what ACT@theCREEK is all about.  They are unique, kind, accepting, and proud of who they are and the work they've done.

Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods is a classic.  It is no wonder the show has won six Tony awards and a Grammy.  While today it is fashionable to have anti-heroes and sympathetic villains, Sondheim was well ahead of the curve in 1987 when he flipped the most loved of Grimm's fairy tales on their head. As Music Theatre International puts it, "Everyone's wish is granted, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later with disastrous results."  We would also like to give a special welcome to any of our returning Indian Creek Alumni - and we'd love to see you on stage next year!  We hope you all enjoy your exciting walk in the woods this evening!

Costumes
Previous costumer credits: SpongeBob The Musical (ICS 2025), These Shining Lives (ICS 2024), Little Women (ACT 2024), The Prom (ICS 2024), and The Play That Goes Wrong (ICS 2023). Emily has been around costuming since her fourth-grade play when a little voice told the director, “My mom can sew!” Emily helped her mom with many projects through every production in Middle and High School and learned a lot from her, Rita Pavloff, and Laura Grindrod. This show’s costumes, as with all shows, started with the script. Into The Woods has the added challenge of bringing a fresh look to classic fairytale characters. "These costumes have evolved several times over the last few months, and this iteration brought me back to my roots as a Studio Artist. I decided on basic color theory to group characters together and separate them from others. There are strong reds, blues, and yellows that melt into secondary colors and then back into the woods themselves. I also loved being able to hide to a ton of Easter eggs throughout all the costumes, so pay attention to tiny details that flesh out each character. Finally, I owe a huge debt of gratitude to Cindy and Julius at the Maryland Renaissance Festival for letting us borrow some of their absolutely amazing costumes! Wearing some of these pieces are dreams come true for some of our actors (me included). Please enjoy the show!"

Matt McCormick

Stage Director, Co-founder ACT@theCREEK
Matt has been associated with theater at Indian Creek for over two decades. After a brief flirtation with theater in college, he was recruited to work on the Creek's Middle School production of Peter Pan in 2001, and he's never looked back. Highlights for Matt include directing August Wilson's "Fences," "The Laramie Project," "The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged)," and more recently "These Shining Lives." He's proud of the work he's done on dozens of shows with directing partner Jill Woodward, and is even more proud that so many alumni have gone on to perform and work at the highest levels worldwide! Matt is ecstatic that the community theater dreamed up years ago is now in its third season! This cast of "Into the Woods" truly represents what community theater is. Matt would like to thank his wife Tiffany, and his theater nerd kids, Campbell '24 and Rooney '29 for everything they put up with during every show. Now, sit back and enjoy and look for more to come from ACT@theCREEK every summer!

Jill Woodward

Musical Director; Co-founderACT@theCREEK
Jill is thrilled to celebrate the third season of Alumni Community Theater—a dream turned reality! After directing over 100 productions at ICS—most in collaboration with her longtime directing partner Matt McCormick—she is incredibly proud of this growing venture and the extraordinary cast and crew who have come together to celebrate the power of storytelling and the joy of theater. Over the years, ICS productions have reached impressive—and sometimes literal—heights, from middle schoolers soaring above the stage in Peter Pan to over 100 Upper School students taking on the energy and choreography of Newsies. Watching athletes transform into actors and former ICS performers go on to appear on Broadway has brought Jill immeasurable joy. She hopes the ACT project continues to inspire more alumni and community members to rekindle their love of the arts for years to come. This season is especially exciting as we welcome many new faces to the ICS stage. We love seeing fresh talent and new community connections taking root here. Across her 30 years at ICS, Jill has had the privilege of teaching performing arts in every grade from PK through 12. It has been her lifelong passion to bring students and audiences meaningful musical and theatrical experiences, grounded in rich literature and fueled by creativity. She’s especially grateful for the opportunity to work with students from their earliest Lower School days through their confident and inspiring performances in Upper School—and now as alumni. Jill feels deeply fortunate to have met her wonderful husband Brad (ICS’s beloved history teacher!) at school, and to have raised both of their children, Samantha ’13 and Jamie ’22, as part of this vibrant community. Thank you to this incredible cast for your spirit, talent, and sense of fun—and to 30 years of students who have made this journey so unforgettable.
