A Note from the Director
Set in the Bohemian city of Prague just after the end of the nineteenth century, a time when the dehumanization of industrialization fights against the romantic expectations of polite society, KAFKA’S METAMORPHOSIS reminds us of how thoroughly a mind and spirit can be destroyed by outside forces of selfishness, neglect and greed. Gregor Samsa is horribly transformed into the vermin he is treated as, and the audience watches as his world devolves into a prison of confusion and pain. In this world where neglect is commonplace, we move jarringly from the gentle dreaminess of the (sub)conscious to the harsh starkness and sometimes absurd reality of everyday existence. As Gregor’s metamorphosis reaches its conclusion, the story reveals what is critically important in a life; to see and be seen, to love and be loved.
