A Note from our Director:
Welcome to the wonderfully clever, dazzling, and yet deeply challenging world of Cole Porter's Kiss Me, Kate. This is not just a Golden Age comedy; it is a profound study of ego, hubris, and the crippling cost of needing to be "right."
Our production is built on a high-contrast vision of Padua, paying direct homage to Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew. This aesthetic is heightened by the use of masks and stylized physical work borrowing from Commedia dell'arte, emphasizing the archetypal, performative nature of their conflict. Here, the battles rage not only between individuals but against the very ecosystem they inhabit.
The stage of Shrew serves as a battleground for our four leads: the volatile, co-starring ex-spouses, Fred and Lilli, whose towering pride prevents reconciliation, and the charmingly chaotic pair, Bill and Lois, who are paralyzed by their lack of honest communication and decisive action.
Furthermore, we intentionally framed the narrative through the lens of Katherine as "Christopher Sly," watching the action unfold around her. We must acknowledge that the tropes of women in the 1940s often relegated them to two extremes: the "shrew" or the "object of desire." Surrounding these women is a chorus of characters who relentlessly reinforce male-centric, stereotypical behavior.
Our goal is not to offer easy answers, but to showcase these flawed, proud people with a flair for dramatics. A story only truly progresses when we acknowledge our shared responsibility in losing focus on what is truly valuable. For a genuine, collaborative community to emerge—both on stage and in life—every person must humble themselves and allow ego to die so that the "core/heart" of a human can be authentically seen.
- Joshua McKinney, Director
A Note About our Student-Led Design Teams:
At Harrison School for the Arts, productions are more than performances — they’re opportunities for students to take ownership of every aspect of storytelling. While the actors bring the script to life on stage, a dedicated team of student designers works tirelessly behind the scenes to create the worlds you see, hear, and feel in the theater.
This year’s production of Kiss Me Kate is no exception. From the moment the curtain rises to the last note of the score, nearly every visual and technical element has been envisioned, drafted, and developed by students. Scenic design, lighting, costumes, props, sound — each area is led by a student designer who has taken on the responsibility of shaping how the story reaches the audience.
Of course, they are not working in isolation. Harrison’s faculty, along with parent mentors and volunteers, provide valuable guidance, mentorship, and hands-on help to ensure that student ideas become a reality. Whether it’s assisting with construction, sourcing materials, or lending expertise, the adult team is here to support and empower. But the creative direction — the vision, style, and conceptual heart of the designs — is entirely student-driven.
This model is rare in high school theatre. In many programs, students may assist in technical roles but seldom get the chance to serve as the primary designers, let alone get the credit to apply to their resumes. At Harrison, we believe in trusting students with the responsibility to lead, to experiment, and to innovate. They learn not only the artistry and craftsmanship of design but also the collaboration, problem-solving, and leadership skills that come with it.
What you’ll read in the following pages are interviews with some of these extraordinary young artists. They share their inspirations, their challenges, their process, and their pride in seeing their visions come to life on stage.
We are incredibly proud of the creativity, resilience, and professionalism of our student design team. Their work proves that theatre is not just about performance — it is about collaboration, vision, and the courage to bring an idea from sketchbook to stage.
So as you watch Kiss Me Kate, we invite you to look a little closer. Notice the set pieces that shift the story’s worlds, the costumes that bring characters to life, the lighting that paints the stage, and the sounds that transport you. Behind each of these is a student designer, leading the way with artistry and imagination.
