Synopsis
The meek floral assistant Seymour Krelborn stumbles across a new breed of plant he names "Audrey II" - after his coworker crush. This foul-mouthed, R&B-singing carnivore promises unending fame and fortune to the down and out Krelborn as long as he keeps feeding it, BLOOD. Over time, though, Seymour discovers Audrey II's out of this world origins and intent towards global domination!
Content Warning
Though it’s thoroughly entertaining, there are some scenes in Little Shop of Horrors that may not be appropriate for some viewers and could potentially be scary/creepy to viewers under the age of 13. Children and Pre-teens should attend at a parent’s discretion.
Language: Some of the characters use language that might be inappropriate to some.
Drug Use: The dentist character (Orin) uses and abuses laughing gas (nitrous oxide) to add to his disturbed nature. This abuse is “campy” in nature and is meant to be seen or understood as a satirical, over-the-top rendition of a dentist.
Violence: Audrey II is a man-eating plant that demands to be fed. The plant is successful in “eating” some of the main characters as a means to satisfy his greed. In one scene, the remains of one of the characters is fed to the plant. All of the violence is “campy” in nature and not gory/scary. Also, Orin, the dentist, is a pretty awful person and is abusive to Audrey, his girlfriend. This could potentially be troubling to some, but it is meant to serve as a dramatic device to make the dentist out as one of the true villains. Directors Note
Little Shop of Horrors is a unique blend of dark comedy, horror, and heart. At its core, it’s a story about ambition, desire, and the consequences of getting caught in a cycle of wanting more than we can handle. The show's themes of greed, manipulation, and the consequences of our actions resonate just as strongly today as they did when the show was first conceived. In a world where we often prioritize our desires over our ethics, Little Shop of Horrors serves as a cautionary tale. I hope you leave this performance with a fresh perspective on the things in life that may seem harmless—perhaps even a little scared of your plants!
One of my goals with this production was to bring a comedic show that could be enjoyed by all, while still preserving the essence of what makes Little Shop so beloved. I wanted to create an immersive experience, which is why I’m so excited to incorporate scenic projections to help transport us right into the world of Audrey II. These projections give the show a dynamic energy that makes the story feel even more alive and tangible. Of course, the plant itself had to be a living, breathing character—so we’ve brought Audrey II to life with a puppet that is as lifelike as possible. It was important to me that the plant feels as menacing and powerful as the story demands.
Reflecting on my journey as a director, it all began over five years ago when I first started working with students and music. Since then, I’ve had the privilege of being both a director and a music director, and I’ve grown tremendously with each project. Becoming a high school director is a dream come true, and I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to do so.
A huge thank you to my amazing creative team, the dedicated AMHS staff, and my supportive family—without your constant encouragement and collaboration, none of this would be possible. And to the cast, crew, and orchestra, thank you for your passion, your energy, and your unwavering commitment to this show. I hope you enjoy the performance as much as we’ve enjoyed creating it for you!
