Director's Note
I keep thinking about circles.
About how easy it is to return to the same memories, the same longings, the same versions of ourselves — not because they are best for us, but because they are familiar. There is comfort in what we know, even when it keeps us in the same place.
Lost Girl lives inside that space between holding on and letting go.
All of these characters are circling something: childhood, love, regret, fear, a moment when life felt simpler and safer. Wendy, especially, is caught between who she was and who she is becoming. The farther she travels into memory, the harder it becomes to move forward — and yet moving forward is required, inevitable, courageous.
J.M. Barrie wrote, “The moment you doubt whether you can fly, you cease forever to be able to do it.”
I think this less about magic and more about becoming: that stepping into what comes next always asks for belief before certainty. For me, this play is about stepping out of the loop, about slowly unwinding grief and longing until there is finally room for something new. Not because the past stops mattering, but because growth asks us to loosen our grip on it.
Working on this show, and with these students, has reminded me how brave it is to grow up.
This company has approached this story with honesty, vulnerability, and enormous care. They have trusted silence, stillness, humor, and emotional risk in ways that are not easy, especially in a world that constantly asks young people to be louder, faster, and tougher than they feel.
To the cast: thank you for your courage and generosity with this story.
To the costumers and crew: thank you for building a world that feels like memory and a dream: fluid, fragile, and alive. Your artistry made this story possible.
To my extraordinary colleagues Kari, Avery, and Savannah: thank you for the heart, patience, and creativity you bring to this work every day.
I don’t know exactly when any of us becomes an adult. I only know that it seems to involve grief, risk, love, and the terrifying choice to step into something unknown, even when what we’re leaving behind still feels beautiful. This play suggests that growing up isn’t about forgetting childhood, but about carrying it with us as we move forward.
This production is for every student standing on the edge of something new.
And for my own children: may you always be brave enough to open the window when it’s time, and strong enough to close it when you must.
There has been so much joy in creating this production: laughter in crew calls, discoveries in moments of stillness, and the quiet thrill of watching a story slowly take shape. And with that joy always comes a little sorrow, because every show is also a letting go.
Maybe that’s part of the lesson of this play, too.
Growing up, creating art, loving people: all of it seems to require the same leap of faith. The willingness to believe we can fly, even when we’re not sure where we will land.
Here forever,
J Smith

Costumer Snippets
Lost Girl! Just when we thought this might be a simpler show to costume—Wrong!
The script is beautifully contemporary— a poetic dreamscape. Yet many of the characters are still based on the familiar 1900’s Peter Pan and Wendy story.
How do we make the costumes support this coming of age story which comes after Neverland? What could that LOOK like?
After trying this and that, we finally wandered into a whimsical goth/punk/recycled/vintage theme. With the added spiky, messy hair and moody makeup, we truly enjoyed the entire meandering process. We mixed quirky colors, patterns, and vintage pieces together into an odd and playful look for the older Lost Boys. We kept Wendy trapped in her iconic blue nightgown. And then we gathered up an ethereal mix of floaty tulle, velvet and lace for the girls. And Peter? Well, we figured that he may have taken one last colorful memento with him from Neverland…..
Thank you to our imaginative and hard working costume crew and to our student TED’s. Thank you to Savannah and the technical crew for the very cool set/sound/lights. Thank you Avery for your insights and overall loveliness. Lindsay, how wonderful to have you on board for teaching hair and makeup. And Joel, my partner in shenanigans, thank you as always for just everything. Lastly, thank you to my dear family for your patience and encouragement as I disappear into our own theatrical Neverland for weeks at a time……🤟🏼
Enjoy the show!
