DIRECTOR'S NOTE
“Welcome home.”
I said these words to the company of performers and technicians you are about to see in action on the very first day we gathered together. For many of them and many of us, the stage feels like home; and for a long time we have been without it. For many reasons and in many ways, the world has felt disorienting and confusing, and we have longed for story and wonder and fantasy. We have longed to be together, and to play and make weird magic together in the way that only happens in the theater.
This longing was the inspiration for our production of MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM. Adapted by local playwright and actor Bess Welden for her Theatre students at Colby College, this 65-minute MIDSUMMER is a fast-paced and energy-filled tour de force. Its energy, action and spirit were infectious and exciting to me as we started to - as is appropriate given the play’s themes - DREAM:
What is this world, this woods, this palace and this place? What are its rules? How does gravity work? How about inertia? What would Shakesepare’s play look like in a world that had been turned upside down and then reinvented with whatever ruins were left over at the end of the turning? I have described this world as “50% ‘Mad Max’ and 50% Burning Man.” It is also 100% truthful to the ideas and the imaginations of the creative team you’ll see tonight. Welcome to this world. We are so happy you’re here. - Dr. P
