From the Producing Artistic Director
Growing up, music was always playing in our home. The phonograph (not yet stereo) was central to the living room décor. And it was constantly on. Loud.
Although my parents’ tastes were eclectic, the earliest music I remember listening to was the Kingston Trio, Harry Belafonte and the recently released Broadway cast album of My Fair Lady. My brother and I would march around the house to “A Little Bit of Luck,” my father would bellow “Aoow and Garn..”, and my sister would make a feeble attempt at a Cockney accent singing “Loverly.”
When the film was released in 1964, we made the trek into NYC early in the run. And, no surprise, seeing the film in full technicolor with dialogue, dancing and Cecil Beaton’s luscious sets and costumes made the songs I knew by heart even more enchanting. It is fair to say that My Fair Lady has been one of my favorite musicals, even before I knew what musicals were.
So when choosing the last production of my tenure at ATG, this seemed a natural fit. The score is as luminous as when I first heard it. The lyrics are unparalleled. And the story, based on Shaw’s Pygmalion, still moves me to tears. But being ATG, we wanted to approach this Classic American Musical in a new way. So we are doing a chamber version with ten actors playing all the roles, and two pianos essaying Frederick Loewe’s incomparable score.
Living with this project on a daily basis over the last several months, and working with such a talented and dedicated group of artists, has been an exquisite experience. And it feels like the perfect ending for my time at ATG. I hope you enjoy this production as much as we have all enjoyed working on it.
I look forward to being a member of the audience at future ATG productions. I hope you'll join me.
