5oth Anniversary

 

Cockpit in Court Summer Theatre is celebrating our 50th Anniversary this year!

Fifty years of Cockpit adds up to more than 120 musicals produced, more than 100 plays, over 35 Court Jesters productions, and 25 classics in the courtyard! (Remember those?) Over fifty years of Cockpit, more than 5,000 of our friends have played roles on these stages, designed sets and lights and costumes, directed and choreographed and played in the orchestra pit. We’ve seen literally a thousand young people find their footing with the Court Jesters, and dozens of them have made their way to the Cabaret or the Mainstage. Cockpit has performed in at least six different venues on campus, and also taken the gift of theatre to Russia and Japan.

In recognition of these phenomenal numbers and the impact Cockpit has had on so many lives, we are asking you, our faithful Cockpit supporters, to make a gift of $50 in honor of our 50th anniversary! It is our mission to present a diverse, well-balanced, quality theatrical season that promotes inclusion, embraces all cultures, experiences, and backgrounds, and fosters creativity among actors, artistic and production staff, the Board of Directors, and the community. Director's Note

Night Watch opened February 1972 at the Morosco Theatre in New York City. It was written by Lucille Fletcher, best known for the radio play/stage play/film, Sorry, Wrong Number. Fletcher also wrote the libretto of Wuthering Heights: Opera in 4 Acts and a Prologue with her then husband, composer Bernard Herrmann. She wrote for radio in the 1940’s, with close to two dozen plays, including The Hitch-Hiker for The Orson Welles Show. Between 1948 and 1988 she wrote novels. With titles like Blindfold, And Presumed Dead and The Girl in Cabin B54 it’s obvious that Fletcher had a deep affection for mysteries … and she knew how to write them. 

Night Watch is a blend of Gaslight, Rear Window and The Sixth Sense. I’m not going to tell you which particular elements relate to the play. You will find out soon enough. 

Night Watch was brought to the Cockpit Board of Directors by Vice President Toby Hessenauer. Audiences tend to love mysteries in the Cabaret and Cockpit in Court has obliged them with a terrific one, but that isn’t the only reason Toby suggested it.

Cockpit in Court is celebrating its 50th Anniversary. Fifty years of summer theatre! What could be better than producing a play celebrating its 50th Anniversary?

The last Cockpit in Court Cabaret production was summer of 2019: The Unexpected Guest, a little known and rarely performed mystery by Agatha Christie. Audiences were enthusiastic, so when selecting plays for the following summer the CIC Board went for the biggest fish in the pond: Christie’s And Then There Were None, scheduled to open in the Cabaret in July of 2020. By early March of 2020, the show was cast, the designers were onboard, and it was full steam ahead. Then everything ground to a halt. A year passed with dark, empty theaters throughout
the country.

In March of 2021, cautious steps were taken to bring Cockpit in Court back in a safe and responsible way. Done and done. The ghost light came on again in the F. Scott Black Theatre and And Then There Were None and Moana, Jr. were presented on the Main Stage.

It would take another year for the Cabaret.

Summer of 2022. Cockpit in Court has a full slate of terrific shows upstairs and downstairs. The Cabaret is ready for its first audience since 2019! We’re serving up a mystery with all the twists and turns you could ask for. We are thrilled to have you celebrate the 50th anniversaries of Cockpit in Court and Lucille Fletcher’s Night Watch with us.

Regina Rose - Elaine Wheeler Regina is back on stage for her tenth show with Cockpit having previously appeared in The Unexpected Guest (Miss Bennett), Come Back to the Five & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean, (Mona), The Gazebo (Mrs. Chandler), Don’t Drink the Water (Marion), Social Security (Trudy), Bell, Book and Candle (Nicky), and Brighton Beach Memoirs (Nora). She has also been the stage manager of Cockpit’s productions of An Evening of Murder and Forever Plaid. She has acted in, stage managed, and directed over 100 shows for various theatres throughout Maryland, Michigan, Rhode Island, and Canada. Her favorite roles include Blanche in Brighton Beach Memoirs, Lenny in Crimes of the Heart, Truvy in Steel Magnolias, and Ophelia in Hamlet. Offstage, Regina performs one woman living history shows portraying such noteworthy females as Rear Admiral Grace Hopper, Katharine Wright, Caroline Astor and First Ladies including Edith Wilson and Louisa Adams. She thanks her husband Mike, her Mom and her family for their continuing support and love.

John Wheeler
Thom Peters - John Wheeler Thom has appeared in more than a dozen productions on the Cockpit stage and was seen last year on the main stage as Justice Wargrave in And Then There Were None. Other favorite roles at Cockpit in Court have been Petrucchio in The Taming of the Shrew, Prospero in The Tempest, Inspector Rough in Angel Street, Max Cranwell in The Edge of Darkness, and Elliot Nash in The Gazebo. He has also enjoyed performing at Vagabond Players and Fells Point Corner Theatre, and is delighted to be directed again by Linda Chambers and to have the pleasure of working again with fellow cast members Gina, Jen, Liz and Joey. He earned a BA in drama many years ago, taught high school English for several years, and is now happily retired after a long career in television production at WMAR-TV.

Jennifer Skarzinski

Jennifer Skarzinski - Blanche Jennifer is thrilled to be a part of this talented cast and is grateful for this opportunity to be at Cockpit again. Some favorite previous roles include Felicia in I Hate Hamlet at Dundalk Community Theater, Mrs. Soames in Our Town and Kristine in A Doll's House at Vagabond Theater, Sissy in Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean, Carol in Laughter on the 23rd Floor, Barbara in Social Security, Evalita in Daddy’s Dyin’ Who’s Got the Will? at Cockpit in Court, Sandrine/Marci in Almost, Maine at Ruxton Players, Tina/Erica in Game Show at Spotlighters, Queen Marie-Therese in Las Meninas and Evelyn in The Shape of Things at CCBC Academic Theater. Away from the stage, Jennifer is the Coordinator of the Student Success Center at CCBC Essex. Much love to her family and friends for their support, and especially to Eve. 20 Darlings and 15 Shades of NW to Gina!

Liz Boyer Hunnicutt - Helga Liz is delighted to once again spend the summer at Cockpit with Linda Chambers and company. Here are a few of Liz’s many credits for Cockpit: An Inspector Calls, The Gazebo, The Allergist's Wife, Crimes of the Heart, The Unexpected Guest, Come Back to the Five & Dime Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean, Vanya & Sonia & Masha & Spike, And Then There Were None, Disaster The Musical! She is thrilled to once again be directing for this season's Court Jesters production High School Musical. Liz is happily married to James and is also the The Resident Director for The Children's Playhouse of MD in residence here at CCBC.

Thomas C Hessenauer

Curtis Appleby
Thomas C Hessenauer - Curtis Appleby Night Watch marks Thomas’s 90th stage production in the Baltimore/ Annapolis area, and his fifth show at Cockpit having previously appeared here in Nice Work if You Can Get It, Laughter on the 23rd Floor, Towards Zero and An Evening of Murder (in which he was the murder victim twice nightly). A graduate of the University of Rochester, he has studied under members of the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Folger Shakespeare Library. Recently, he has been seen at Dundalk Community Theater in I Hate Hamlet, The Graduate, and The 39 Steps. Previous roles include: Friar Laurence in Romeo and Juliet, Uncle Max in The Sound of Music, and Max Bialystock in The Producers. As a member of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) he can be seen in the award winning HBO film Something the Lord Made , HBO's series The Wire, and the Renee Zellweger film My One and Only. He may also be seen briefly episodes of VEEP and House of Cards.

Joey Hellman

Joey Hellman - Lt. Walker Joey returns to Cockpit after having performed in last year’s production of And Then There Were None. Prior Cockpit roles include The Secret Garden, Lucky Stiff, High Society, The Foreigner, Curtains, How to Succeed…, Big and Mame. CCBC-Dundalk and Catonsville audiences may remember him from A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, The Leader of the Pack, Anything Goes, No, No, Nanette, Hello Dolly!, The 1940’s Radio Hour, You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown, A Grand Night for Singing and O’er the Ramparts (as Francis Scott Key). Among the three CCBC campuses, he has directed The Little Foxes, Steel Magnolias (twice), Driving Miss Daisy (twice), Plaza Suite and Butterflies are Free in addition to Agatha Christie’s Go Back for Murder and Towards Zero. He has also worked as backstage dresser and running crew on several other CCBC shows. He is the Sr. Administrative Coordinator for the Johns Hopkins’ Graduate Clinical Education Office.

Leonard Gilbert

Leonard Gilbert - Vanelli Leonard last appeared at Cockpit in the production of Arsenic and Old Lace in 2017. Wow, that’s a long time ago. He has appeared in area community productions of Never Too Late, The Odd Couple (Oscar), Little Foxes, Evita, Once Upon a Mattress, Jesus Christ Superstar, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Oliver, Cabaret, Inherit the Wind, Sweeney Todd, Urinetown to name a few and was one of the many extras cast for House of Cards. Leonard sang with Opera AACC in their productions of Phantom of the Opera (Firmin) Pirates of Penzance, Elixir of Love, and The Merry Widow. He performs regularly with the murder mystery troupe of whodunnitforhire productions and St Johns, Hydes chorus. Leonard spends his daytime hours practicing his profession as an Architect.

Eva Grove - Dr. Tracey Lake Eva loves being back on the Cockpit in Court stage, last seen in Don’t Drink The Water too long ago! Around the region, she has been in The Graduate, The Bridges of Madison County, Anything Goes, and most recently as Emily in Elf and as Mother in A Christmas Story. When not on stage, Eva works for the CCBC Performing Arts Department and as an Activity Assistant at Brightview Senior Living in Bel Air.

Rodney Bonds - Sam Hoke Rodney has been acting since 1964. Thanks to an anonymous kidney donor, he has the opportunity to do it a few more times. He has my eternal gratitude. If you haven't thought about donating your organs, give it some thought. I waited 4 1/2 years for mine, and it was almost too long. Contact the Johns Hopkins Kidney transplant center for more information.

Linda Chambers

Linda Chambers - Director Linda's previous productions in Cockpit’s Cabaret began with Crimes of the Heart in 2005 and continued through 2019’s The Unexpected Guest. In the summer of 2021, she took a detour to F. Scott Black’s Theatre where, along with the cast and crew worked through zoom, testing, masks and distancing to present Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None to an audience starved for live theatre. She’s thrilled to see all the Cockpit stages filled with activity this summer and to be back in the Cabaret with another mystery, Night Watch. Chambers has written and is directing a one-woman show about Mother Jones (Let The Fight Go On) in collaboration with actress Janel Bosies. She teaches scriptwriting at Carver Center for Arts & Technology, has had several short stories published and is working on the next part of her fantasy coming of age story, The Swords of Ialmorgia (Parts 1 through 3 are available on Amazon Kindle)

TraceyAnn Tokar Smith - Stage Manager TraceyAnn is so glad to be back calling a show in the Cabaret space at Cockpit in Court and to be working once again with Linda Chambers! Previously at Cockpit, TraceyAnn stage managed And Then There Were None, The Unexpected Guest, and Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean. She has also stage managed A Chorus Line, Intimate Apparel, both productions of Mamma Mia, There's No Business Like Show Business, Side Show, A Year with Frog and Toad, The Bridges of Madison County, A Few Good Men, Something's Afoot, and Rumors, and was Properties Manager for A Year with Frog and Toad, Side Show, Catch Me If You Can, Something's Afoot, and My Fair Lady at Dundalk Community Theatre. Her directing credits include Shadowlands at DCT, Three Tall Women at Cockpit in Court Summer Theatre, Rimers of Eldritch at McDaniel College, Arsenic and Old Lace at Vagabonds Theatre, and Billy Would Have Been Thirty Today for the Baltimore Playwrights’ Festival.  Away from the stage, TraceyAnn works as a middle school Theatre, ELA, and Social Studies teacher at Sisters Academy of Baltimore in Lansdowne, MD.

Lisa has worked on over sixty productions in the Baltimore area for many companies including Dundalk Community Theatre, Cockpit in Court Summer Theatre, and Phoenix Festival Theatre. Lisa just celebrated 18 years as the Box Office Manager for CCBC and also serves as the Administrative Manager for Cockpit in Court Summer Theatre. In her spare time, she sits on the Board of Directors for Dundalk Community Theatre and the Twirltastix Boosters.

G. Maurice (Moe) Conn, III - Scenic & Lighting Designer

Moe is in his eleventh year with CCBC where he is the full-time Technical Director and Designer at CCBC Catonsville’s Center for the Arts Theatre. He has an MFA in Scene Design and Technical Theatre. Moe has been doing technical theatre since 1993, as a Designer, Technician, Technical Director, and Educator. He served as the Technical Director for five summers at Cockpit in Court where he continues to design both lights and sets. He has also designed for Vagabond Players in Fells Point. Moe has received multiple nominations for Best Scene Design from Broadway World.com and Received Best Scenic Design from the MD Theatre Guide’s Readers’ Choice Awards. When not backstage, Moe volunteers with “Behind the Scenes” which provides financial support for theatre technicians in need throughout the entertainment industry. He also helps coordinate the Long Reach Long Riders charity motorcycle ride, (www.LRLR.org) to benefit Broadway Cares/Equity fights AIDS and Behind the Scenes, two theatre-based charities.
