About The Play

“Modern times are boring. Besides, the way I see it, our generation is doomed. Because we’re all culturally bankrupt. We have no tangible things to pass down to our children. No artifacts. No family heirlooms. All we have is fleeting virtual moments.” – Gideon 

Gideon is a young man of 27. To say he is a hardcore history buff is an understatement. His list of reenactment assignments is long and diverse: he’s done Gettysburg, Salem, Shaker Village, Daniel Webster, a few Renaissance Fairs when he was in college, five birthplaces of Republican Politicians, and he just got back from doing the Living History Farm in Urbandale, Iowa. He describes it as “an addiction.” For him, his “brain is like a twenty-four-hour History Channel.” It will be Gideon who, as Julian Glockner, will be the first to welcome you into New York City’s Lower East Side Tenement Museum: a home of living history, in this case, circa 1890. Our tour will last about one hour and forty minutes and has the potential to be a bumpy ride.

At his side is Margie, a 26-year-old Filipina who has herself just “immigrated” to New York from a small town in Michigan looking for more of what life has to offer. With a degree in English and no experience whatsoever as an actor or a reenactor or even as an educator, and no love for this period of history either, she has landed a job at the Museum playing Josephine Glockner; that is, if she can hold it together. Gideon does not hide his shock and disappointment that the museum would hire this non-white young woman who actually thinks that “history is bullshit.”

Over the course of this evening you, the audience in our theatre and by extension at the museum, will get to know the Glockners, Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe. From their marriage, arranged and performed by the rabbi in their village just in time for them to catch the boat, speaking of bumpy rides, they long for a better future that they hope they will find in New York. 

Our playwright, Carly Mensch, tells us that, she “came up with the idea of historical reenactments, turning the theater into a sort of museum. I’m deeply amused and intrigued by this idea that if you put on a costume and talk in a hokey accent that history becomes present tense.”

Thrust together as both young American adults and young Jewish immigrants Gideon/Julian and Margie/Josephine will form relationships that will grow and change. The past and the future come closer and closer together until both couples get thrown asunder, as a type of confusion leads them all to very different and often unexpected conclusions as our tour comes to an end. 

Gideon, quoting Antonio in William Shakespeare’s The Tempest reminds us that, “The past is prologue,” as we come closer to understanding that our “now” could not, would not exist without our “then.” How will we look back on our time? What will we want to make sure to remember?

For those of you who think the name Carly Mensch is familiar, you have probably heard of her numerous and impressive television credits. Not long after our current show originally opened, she became a story editor on the Showtime series Weeds. Mensch went on to write and produce for Nurse Jackie, and Orange is the New Black. Along with Liz Flahive she co-created the Netflix series GLOW, for which she was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series in 2018 as well as Writers Guild and Producers Guild nominations. This is not an uncommon story for many of the playwrights whose work has been presented at Capital Stage. But like the others, the seeds were planted and nurtured in theatre.

Mensch, who now lives in the Eagle Rock neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, was born and raised in Harrison, New York. She graduated from Dartmouth College in 2005 and attended Julliard’s MFA program. 

Mensch's plays include the production you are seeing today as well as Oblivion (Steppenwolf’s First Look Festival, Westport Playhouse), All Hail Hurricane Gordo (Humana Festival, Cleveland Play House), and Len, Asleep in Vinyl (2nd Stage/Uptown Series). Her work has also been read, workshopped, and developed at Playwrights Horizons, Manhattan Theatre Club, Center Theatre Group, The Kennedy Center, Marin Theatre Company, New York Stage & Film, and Ars Nova the theatre where this production began and where she was the 2008 Playwright-in-Residence and a founding member of Play Group. She volunteers with the 52nd Street Project, an organization that creates theater with inner city kids.

Prior to the first production of Now Circa Then, she was being interviewed about her plays and was asked, “what was coming up next?” Mensch volunteered that the play that we are sharing with our audience today had a most unique beginning.

“I wrote [this play] with a specific space in mind - Ars Nova. For those who don't know Ars Nova, it's a sort of old-school vaudeville cabaret theater. Red velvet curtains, bar in the back, very intimate. I wanted to write a two-person play that used the performative aspect of the space and I came up with the idea of historical reenactments, turning the theater into a sort of museum. I'm deeply amused and intrigued by historical reenactments - this idea that if you put on a costume and talk in a hokey accent that history becomes present-tense. I based the museum on one of my favorite museums in New York - the Lower East Side Tenement Museum - so I could explore issues of immigration and personal reinvention. There's also a love story and a bunch of philosophical smack-downs about why we study history and how our generation is culturally bankrupt. I won't say any more.”

Jeffrey Lo (He/Him/His) is a Filipino-American playwright and director based in the Bay Area. He is thrilled to return to Capital Stage where he directed VIETGONE, HOLD THESE TRUTHS and THE GREAT LEAP. He is the recipient of the Leigh Weimers Emerging Artist Award, the Emerging Artist Laureate by Arts Council Silicon Valley and Theatre Bay Area Director's TITAN Award. Selected directing credits include THE LANGUAGE ARCHIVE, LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, TIGER STYLE! and THE SANTALAND DIARIES at TheatreWorks Silicon Valley, THE GLASS MENAGERIE, CHINGLISH and THE PAPER DREAMS OF HARRY CHIN, A DOLL’S HOUSE, PART 2 and EURYDICE at Palo Alto Players (TBA Awards finalist for Best Direction) and THE GRAPES OF WRATH, THE CRUCIBLE and YELLOW FACE at Los Altos Stage Company. Michael Stevenson

Artistic Director

For Capital Stage, Michael has directed ARCHDUKE, HEROES OF THE FOURTH TURNING, GLORIA, THE LIFESPAN OF A FACT, ADMISSIONS, THE HUMANS, THE OTHER PLACE, SWEAT, THE THANKSGIVING PLAY, LUNA GALE, STUPID F##KING BIRD, HOW TO USE A KNIFE, DISGRACED, MR. BURNS, IDEATION, CLYBOURNE PARK, MAURITIUS, ERRATICA (World Premiere), and LES LIAISONS DANGEREUSES. He has directed at regional theaters including: B Street Theater, Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival, Orlando Shakespeare Company, Perseverance Theater Company, and Sacramento Theater Company. As an actor he has appeared at many regional theaters including: 42nd Street Moon, American Conservatory Theater, The Aurora Theater, Bailiwick Repertory Theater, Capital Stage, B Street Theater, the Utah Shakespeare Festival, and Marriott’s Lincolnshire Theater. He holds an M.F.A. from the American Conservatory Theater.

Keith Riedell

Managing Director

Keith Riedell is celebrating his 17th year at Capital Stage and brings to the company his varied experiences in the theatre, management, team building, counseling, training and corporate improvement. While at Capital Stage he has grown box office operations and installed online ticketing and donor systems, developed sound accounting and financial policies and systems, led efforts to provide living wages and benefits to the staff and artists, and has been an outspoken voice for diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging efforts. Working with the board of directors Mr. Riedell is leading a five-year strategic planning process with Michael Kaiser and the DeVos Institute of Arts Management. The plan, completed in the Summer of 2023 is now in the implementation phase. Along with Artistic Director Michael Stevenson, Keith has worked on capacity building projects with Third Plateau and the University of the Pacific.

Tony Gabrielson

Production & Company Manager

Tony has worked with many theaters and dance companies locally and around the country over the last 15 years as a stage manager, carpenter, painter, and technician. Favorite productions include: DISNEY'S BEAUTY AND THE BEAST with Barter Theater in Abingdon, VA, ON BORROWED TIME at Two River Theater in Red Bank, NJ, and developmental workshops of BOTTLESHOCK! THE MUSICAL. He is blessed and beyond grateful to continue working as an artist in our community. Love and thanks to Jessa and Piper - his favorite people.

Caleb Jones

Technical Director

Caleb is proud to be joining Capital Stage as Technical Director for the 23/24 season. He is new to Sacramento but has worked at the San Diego REPertory theater and with several theaters within Fresno County. Erika L. Placencia*

Stage Manager

Erika Placencia is proud to be the Production stage manager for this show. She made her professional debut at Capital Stage as the production stage manager for CRY IT OUT. She has been an assistant stage manager at Capital Stage for AMERICAN FAST, HOMBRES and HEROES OF THE FOURTH TURNING. She was also a stage management intern at Broadway at Music Circus. She was also assistant stage manager for B Street Theatre’s ‘TIS THE SEASON. She earned her first degree in Media and Communication studies from University of Maryland University College and received her second degree from William Jessup University with Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Arts. She is a proud Air Force Veteran and is happy being able to live her dreams through the support of her family.

Olivia Amore

Assistant Stage Manager

Olivia Amore is a recent graduate from Jessup University with her BA in Technical Theatre. She has worked as a Production Stage Manager, Assistant Stage Manager, and Cast Member. She was in charge of many different technical aspects from Jessup's grand productions of THE WIZARD OF OZ and PETER PAN. She has also enjoyed being an ensemble member in musicals including THE MUSIC MAN. Since working with different theatre companies from Rocklin, California to Plymouth, Massachusetts, Olivia is very excited to officially work with Capital Stage and hopes to be a part of future productions!

Matthew Hanjoong

Assistant Director

Matthew is a graduate from California State University, Sacramento. He has also studied at UCLA and trained with Tim Robbins and The Actors’ Gang. Matthew is thankful to be back at CapStage as Assistant Director and to be working with Jeffrey Lo again. Samantha has been painting sets for over a decade in the greater Sacramento area. She's worked at Sacramento City College, University of California Davis, Sacramento Theatre Company, B Street, and Broadway at Music Circus. This is her third season with Capital Stage.

Nicole C. Limón

Intimacy Coordinator

Nicole is a multidisciplinary theatre artist: an actor/director/dramaturg, and theatre faculty at California State University, Sacramento. She most recently directed: BY THE WAY, MEET VERA STARK (Celebration Arts,) JUST A PINCH: A UTERUS PLAY (Matriarchy,) EVERYBODY; and DANCE NATION (CSUS,) and WATER BY THE SPOONFUL (Teatro Espejo.) She is also a Theatrical Intimacy Director committed to creating consent-forward spaces for artists and is honored to be working with Capital Stage in this capacity. Locally, she has consulted with and staged intimacy for Capital Stage, B Street Theatre, CSUS, Teatro Espejo, Celebration Arts and Sacramento Theatre Company. She is founder of Matriarchy Theatre and local collective Sacramento Theatres of Color, an associate member of Stage Directors and Choreographers Society, and holds an MFA in Acting from UC Davis. K. Kevyne Baar

Dramaturg

Kevyne is thrilled to be a member of the Capital Stage family as the Resident Dramaturg. Productions include GLORIA, HEROES OF THE FOURTH TURNING, PREDICTOR, ARCHDUKE, and NOW CIRCA THEN. A member of Viola Spolin’s Young Actors’ Company who became an Equity Stage Manager, and then the Field Representative for Actors’ Equity’s Western Regional Office, she returned to school in 2001 to work on a PhD. This led to her being Equity’s archivist at the Tamiment Library/Robert F. Wagner Labor Archives at New York University. Kevyne moved from Brooklyn, NY to Davis, CA in 2015, and in 2019 her book, Broadway and the Blacklist was published.
