PRODUCERS’ NOTES
Millions of Americans around the world can easily recognize when you ask them who Dr. Martin Brenner is, played by Matthew Modine, in the hit Netflix Series Stranger Things. You all know him, “Eleven” calls him “Papa”. Just like what “Chief” calls his father in this play. We challenge you to find out how many of those same people know who Dr. Sidney Gottlieb was. We will give you a hint, he was the head of the MK-Ultra mind-control project. It was a covert CIA mind-control program run from 1953-1973. It secretly tested high doses of LSD, hypnosis, and sensory deprivation on unwitting subjects at over 80 institutions, including hospitals and prisons. The ultimate goal of the government program was mind control during the first phase of the Cold War. Go ahead, Google it if you have not already done so.
When Ken Kesey wrote One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, he was writing from firsthand experience as a paid subject in the CIA’s MK-Ultra mind-control experiments. In 1959, while he was a creative writing graduate student at Stanford University, he volunteered for psych experiments at the Menlo Park Veterans Hospital. Unbeknownst to him at the time, these tests were funded by the CIA’s MK-Ultra program to study the effects of psychosis-mimicking drugs.
Kesey enjoyed the psychedelic effects of the drugs, often taking them while working as a night aide in the hospital's psychiatric ward. From these experiences, the inspiration for the 1962 novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest was created.
Our production transposes this story to the 1980s—a decade trapped between the terrifying public revelations of real-world government experimentation and the dark sci-fi folklore it inspired, like the Montauk Project and Stranger Things. By viewing Nurse Ratched’s ward through this lens, we transform the 'Combine' from a metaphorical machine into a literal, high-tech psychological battleground. McMurphy is no longer just a rebel fighting a strict nurse; he is an asset resisting total systematic erasure in a world where the monsters aren't under the bed—they are wearing lab coats. Fast forward to today, one might argue, they are no longer wearing lab coats either. In fact, are they now simply in our hands and we are scrolling through them?
So sit back, but be alert as you enter the Rainbow room and good luck buddies, you will need it!
