Director's Note

DIRECTOR’S NOTE…

The play Radium Girls, written by D.W.Gregory, is a work of historical fiction inspired by the true story of Grace Fryer and the other dial painters in the 1920’s who fought to bring the truth about the horrors of radium use to light and stood up to the corporations, the medical industry and legal professionals who turned a blind eye and sought to keep these truths under wraps. The story is based on events that took place between 1918 and 1928 in Orange, New Jersey in and around the US Radium Corporation. Discovered by Marie & Pierre Curie, radium was all the rage during this time period, thought to improve bones and enhance vitality, radium could be found in chocolate, cosmetics, health elixirs and more. Radium was added to paint for watch dials and other items to be seen in the dark. This was invaluable during World War 1 and many radium companies had lucrative contracts with the government to produce these items. To paint the watches, the dial painters would wet the brush with their lips to make a very fine point and then dip the brush in the paint, this was known as lip dip painting. With every touch to their lips, the girls would ingest trace amounts of radium which, over time, caused painful disease, illness and eventually death. It took many years for the case to come to fruition as the girls faced roadblocks of deceitful corporations, doctors and lawyers. The term ‘Radium Girls’ was coined by 1920’s media to describe the dial painters and their plight as they sought to bring about their lawsuit against  US Radium.

Radium Girls is one of the most produced plays in U.S. High Schools with more than 1800 productions as of September 2023, and offers an unflinching look at how power, money and deception can overtake corporations, government and science.

A heavy subject matter for young actors but an important and relevant story to tell and these students were up to the task. Not only delving into the historical, scientific and legal context of the play but creating a deep connection to the characters and to the story. This was definitely a departure from our usual lighthearted selections but at this moment in our recent history with science, technology, corporations and medicine seemingly moving faster than the speed of light, it was a good time for a reflective piece on humanity.

We provide support in all areas of production, from costumes to sets to concessions to ticket sales and everything in between. OPPAA also provides annual scholarships for performing arts seniors who intend to continue their education in performing arts related fields. Our goal is to encourage and guide students in all aspects of theatre and give them the opportunity to cultivate, grow and learn about the areas of production that interest them both on and off stage. Most importantly, we hope the students learn to love theatre!

ITS Troupe 6074 - Producer ITS TROUPE # 6074 "Act well your part; there all the honor lies." The International Thespian Society (ITS) is an internationally recognized honor society for theatre students that promotes and recognizes student excellence in the theatre arts. There are ITS Troupes at high schools and middle schools across the United States and abroad. Students earn membership by participating in productions and accumulating points based on their theatre work. For more information visit schooltheatre.org. Formed in Fall of 2014, our troupe started with just a few enthusiastic theatre kids who had been involved in productions at Oak Park High School. They wanted to expand their theatre experiences and bring more visibility to the community. With the guidance of a couple of dedicated theatre moms, these students chartered Troupe 6074 of The International Thespian Society. As a troupe we aim to raise awareness for the importance of theatre arts and education through philanthropy, promotion, and being a positive community influence. We incorporate unique individualistic qualities to form a unified group that stands for cooperation, compassion, creativity and communication through theatre.
