Director's Note

It was late spring of 2015. I had just returned home from meeting with the artistic staff of a production of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum that I was directing that August. Out of the blue, I get a phone call from my daughter who is living in New York City.  She is excited to tell me that she has just seen one of the funniest shows that she’s ever seen and that it would be a perfect show for me to direct.  Now, Forum is already a funny favorite of mine so I’m skeptical, but she insists her mom and I need to get to the City to see it.  She explains the premise and my interest is peeked. I promise that we will make plans to see it as soon as Forum closes and she hangs up.

But now I ask myself, I understand how audiences will get the musical references but what about all the Shakespeare? Then I remembered seeing a post online “Things We Say Today, Which We Owe to Shakespeare” and realized that even if many in the audience don’t know Shakespeare’s plays, they know Shakespeare – “in a pickle”, “baited breathe”, “too much of a good thing”, even “knock, knock! who’s there?”  Okay, I really do have to see it to confirm what my daughter shared.

Well, once I saw it, Something Rotten became one of my favorite musicals. It is smart but not snobbish, clever yet very approachable, and really, really funny. I hadn’t laughed out loud that much at a show in a long time.  Witty dialogue and lyrics and a very hummable score and, oh, lots and lots of schtick. I said to myself, self, this show is right up your alley (don’t think Shakespeare wrote that one) and it moved to the top of my bucket list of shows I wanted to direct. Now I’ve been given that opportunity at one of my favorite theatres, Cockpit in Court, the home of some of my most cherished theatrical memories. Thanks to the artistic team and a very talented and hard-working cast for making the journey with me. Checking this one of that list has been a pleasure. Enjoy the show!

J Purnell Hargrove

Minstrel/Robin/Ensemble

J is returning to Cockpit in Court after dancing it up in Nice Work If You Can Get It and many years ago as Seaweed in Hairspray. They are the co-founder of The Greasy Utterson, a new podcast company which released a long form audio drama version of The Secret Garden, found on all major podcast platforms. In their free time, they have been perfecting the art of reheating pizza in an air fryer, because it’s randomly harder than it should be. Most recently, they played Dwight Gottlieb in the record breaking performance of Dead Man’s Cell Phone at Fells Point Corner Theatre and the titular character of Palmer Eldritch in The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch at The Mercury Theatre. Next up, come out and see J as Sheldon in The Prom, right here at Cockpit in Court, and as The Keeper of the Cosmos in the world premier of Lyra and the Ferocious Beast with TruePenny Productions. Jake Stuart

Jake is thrilled to return to Cockpit, having appeared most recently in And Then There Were None (Philip Lombard), Sister Act (Curtis), Wedding Singer (Sammy) and Thoroughly Modern Millie (Trevor Graydon). Other favorite roles include Beast (Beauty and the Beast), Mark (RENT), John Wilkes Booth (Assassins), all at Phoenix Festival Theater, as well as Tateh (Ragtime, Howard CC), Jerry Lukowski (Full Monty, Tidewater Players), Joseph (Joseph...Dreamcoat, Suburban Players) and many, many more. By day, Jake is a Captain in the Baltimore County Fire Department. Thanks to wife Lauren and his daughter Carly.

Mikey Floyd

This is Mikey’s first show with Cockpit in court, and he’s super excited to be able to perform on this stage with so many talented individuals! Chuck Hamrick

Chuck is thrilled to be a part of this incredibly talented cast and production team. Chuck serves as President of The Scottfield Theatre Company (Harford County, MD). He has enjoyed both directing and acting in shows throughout the theatre community in Harford and Baltimore Counties. Recent credits include directing The Prom, White Christmas, the area premier of Something Rotten, and Annie. Favorite acting roles include Constable Joe (Tuck Everlasting), TJ (Sister Act), and Toymaker (Babes in Toyland). Chuck sings with Parkside Harmony, a men’s acapella group. Highlights with Parkside Harmony include performances at Carnegie Hall (NYC) and opening for Pentatonix in concert. Chuck would like to thank his beautiful wife Kim for her support and love. He and Kim are very proud of their children, Katlyn and Kyle.

Chris Barsam

Shylock

Chris is thrilled to be back on the Cockpit stage with this amazing cast. He was last seen here as Felix in The Odd Couple. He was proud to have played Shylock in the area premiere of Something Rotten for Scottfield Theater. Other favorite roles include The Wizard of Oz (Oz), Gypsy (Herbie), Disney’s Beauty and the Beast (Maurice), and Sister Act (Curtis). Chris is frequently suspected of murder in regionally produced comedy whodunit shows on boats and trains, no planes. Yet.

Elizabeth Marion

Bea Bottom

Liz has been performing in musicals since high school, first stepping on the stage in 1940’s Radio Hour. She earned a BFA in Music Theatre from Elon University with a minor in dance. Liz performed professionally at Main Street Theater and Wild Adventures Theme Park. Some of her favorite roles are Charity Barnum in Barnum, Rosemary in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Laurie in Oklahoma, and Cassie in A Chorus Line. Over the last five years, she has been seen with Scottfield Theatre Company as Mae Tuck in Tuck Everlasting, Alice Beane in Titanic, Rosie in Mamma Mia, Sister Mary Patrick in Sister Act, The Spirit of Christmas Present in Scrooge, The Musical, Grace Farrell in Annie, Bea Bottom in Something Rotten!, and Martha Watson in White Christmas. She is thrilled to be in her first show with Cockpit in Court in a role she dearly loves. Thank you to John Desmone, Nathan Scavilla, and Becky Titelman for believing in this Bea!

Tom Wyatt

Tom's history at Cockpit goes back a very long time, working as both an actor and a director/choreographer. Acting roles include Ira in The Tale of the Allergist's Wife, Harlow in The Gazebo and Shark Bait in Disaster! Directing Credits include Sister Act, Me and My Girl, The Secret Garden, Curtains, Into The Woods, Oklahoma, 42nd Street and last year's Once On This Island. Other local acting credits include The Drowsy Chaperone (Man In Chair), Casa Valentina (Charlotte), The Shadow Box (Brian), Enchanted April (Frederick), Royal Gambit (King Henry VIII), Rumors (Lenny Ganz) and Noises Off (Lloyd Dallas).

Maggie Dennis

Maggie (she/her) is so excited to make her Cockpit debut reprising the role of Portia! She could recently be seen as Judy Haynes (White Christmas) and Emma Nolan (The Prom) with Scottfield Theatre Company. Other roles include Hermia (A Midsummer Night’s Dream, ESP), Cathy (The Last Five Years), Emily (Our Town), Gretchen (Boeing Boeing), Audrey (Little Shop of Horrors). Adam Biemiller

Adam is incredibly honored to be performing in his first Cockpit in Court production. He is especially excited to be returning to his most beloved role to date, as he has previously been seen as Brother Jeremiah in the Scottfield Theatre Company production of Something Rotten. He has also recently been seen in STC’s productions of Annie as Oliver Warbucks, White Christmas as General Waverly and The Prom as Tony Wood. Adam is so thankful for all the support and encouragement he has received from his incredible wife, Meghan, his amazing daughters, Piper and Quinn as well as all the rest of you heathens!

Al Tony Conte

Al Tony is a Pittsburgh native who is happy to be returning to Cockpit in Court for his second performance. Al Tony earned a Theatre Minor at Penn State and is currently pursuing a Master’s in Education at Johns Hopkins University. He currently teaches chemistry and theatre for the Baltimore City Public School System. His proudest accomplishment is being the father of three beautiful kittens. Al Tony has partnered with Sammy Jungwirth to create @cj_productions0104. He would like to thank everyone involved in this production and his students, friends, and family for their priceless support. Recent credits include: Director of Annie (SHS) and Almost Maine (REACH). Also performing as Trent Oliver in The Prom (ST), Robbie Hart in The Wedding Singer (SS), Calogero in A Bronx Tale (DCT), Oscar Lindquist in Sweet Charity (Cockpit), and George Bailey in It’s A Wonderful Life (DCT). Jay Doubledee

Jay is most pleased to have been provided an opportunity to continue his streak of performing important cameo roles in the area. He has appeared in fun and interesting parts in numerous productions. An incomplete list includes: the voice of Paul Harvey in Damn Yankees, the Camera Man in How to Succeed in Business…, the corpse in both 9 to 5 and City of Angels, where he also appeared as the man in the iron lung, a non-singing waiter in Hello, Dolly, the janitor in A Taffetas Christmas, and the man with a beard who pops out of a box dressed as a woman in the opening number of A Funny Thing Happened…, to name just a few. He is honored to have the opportunity to have so much stage time and with lines that move the plot forward. Thanks to the production staff for entrusting me with the MOJ. Fingers crossed, it could be my big break.

Maxwell Wolf

Maxwell is so excited to be returning to Cockpit in Court. Maxwell has been performing in the Baltimore area since he was a child. You may have seen him as Slightly Soiled in Cockpit’s 2013 production of Peter Pan. Recent roles include; Chip Tolentino in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee(Artistic Synergy of Baltimore), Carmen Ghia in The Producers (Third wall Productions), Jack in Into The Woods (Phoenix Theatre Festival), Solomon in Speech and Debate and RENT (Heritage Players) Catch him next as Henry Ford in Ragtime this fall (Maryland Theatre Collective). As always he wants to thank his wonderful girlfriend and family for their support.

Marshall Logan Gibbs

Marshall is ecstatic to be making his debut at Cockpit in Court. Some of his favorite theatre credits include Dewey Finn (School of Rock), LeFou (Beauty and the Beast), Otto (Spring Awakening), and Mr. Bungee (A New Brain). When not performing, Marshall is a bard himself: his original plays have been produced by Truest Ethos Theatre Company and Dover Little Theatre and his musical He Has Risen was workshopped at CCBC Catonsville. He graduated from CCBC with a degree in Theatre/Performance in 2022. He would like to thank Christina for her constant outpouring of kindness and Max for driving him home from rehearsal all the time.

Derek Cooper

Derek happily returns to Cockpit in Court after having last performed in The Little Mermaid (Sebastian). Other credits include The Prom (Mr. Hawkins, STC), Macabaret (Paul Bearer, StillPointe), A Chorus Line (Don, DCT), Welcome to Shakesville(Flute, BROS), Catch Me If You Can (Agent Dollar, DCT), Heathers: The Musical (Big Bud Dean/Ens., SUFT) Ragtime (Ens., LMP), Sharkespeare (Sir Francine Bacon, FM), and Peter Rabbit & Me (Mr. Potter/Mr. McGregor, PT). Derek currently works as a Senior Education Specialist at Port Discovery Children’s Museum. He is also a member of the Baltimore Rock Opera Society’s artistic council. Derek sends his love and thanks to his family, friends, and fellow artists in the MD community theatre scene.

Kenny Alam

This is Kenny’s debut with Cockpit, very excited to be part of this amazing group and perform with these talented actors is beyond happiness!! Kenny is originally from Guatemala and started this theater path with GAP (Glyndon Area Players) in Beauty and The Beast 2017 (Gaston Cronies/Ensemble), Hello Dolly 2018 (Ensemble), Mary Poppins 2019 ( Mr Von Hussler) and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat 2022(Judah) and performed as well with DCT (Dundalk Community Theater) in Mamma Mia 2020! Kenny’s always wanted to be part of the theater world since he can remember and unfortunately didn’t have the opportunity to do it back in his country. But since he had the chance to perform on stage, the love for live theater grows every day and the positivism that brings to his life is what makes him to put more effort and work really hard to bring him joy and positivism.

Adam Nelson

Adam is excited to make his stage debut with Cockpit in Court. Adam loves being part of the local theatre community that has given him the opportunity to perform in shows such as My Fair Lady, Mary Poppins, Fiddler on the Roof, Shrek, Hello Dolly, Young Frankenstein, Jekyll & Hyde, Titanic, Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables . When not in rehearsal, Adam enjoys writing, ballroom dancing, and eating french fries. Adam has enjoyed making omelets with the cast and thanks John Desmone for this wonderful opportunity!

Sam Spencer

Harry/Bard Boy/Ensemble

This is Sam's first show here at Cockpit, and his first show that he's done outside of school productions! He loves getting to do it with such a wonderful cast, and a fantastic director in the form of one John Desmone, who has made him feel welcomed into the community. Everyone involved has put in so much love and effort into this show, and he is incredibly excited that he's gotten to play any sort of part in the show.

Erin Acerno

Erin is so excited to be returning to the Cockpit stage for her final show before college! Her very first show was at Cockpit In Court when she was seven years old in the ensemble of Seussical Jr. Other Cockpit shows include Annie Jr, The Little Mermaid Jr, Mulan Jr, Madagascar Jr, and Aladdin Jr all as a member of the ensemble. You may have seen her recently in Beauty and the Beast (Enchantress/Dancer) with Phoenix Festival Theatre, Mary Poppins (Neleus/Valentine/Dance Captain) with Suburban Players, Cats (Tantomile) with Tidewater Players, RENT (Mimi Marquez) and Chicago (Roxie Hart) both with Tidewater Teens. Other favorite roles include Legally Blonde (Dance Ensemble/Dance Captain) with Suburban Players, Annie (Boylan Sister/Ensemble) and Scrooge (Martha Cratchit) with Scottfield Theatre Company. Erin has been dancing at Rage Box Dance Center since she was 2 years old, and is a teaching assistant for the preschool classes. Erin is so excited to be attending Rider University in the fall. Laura is excited to perform in her first Cockpit in Court show. Her previous credits include choreographing and directing for Patapsco High School and Center for the Arts as well as Lansdowne High School.

Katelyn Dixon

Katelyn is thrilled to be in her first production with Cockpit in Court! She was recently seen in Grease with Phoenix Festival Theatre and A Chorus Line with Dundalk Community Theatre. She was also the choreographer for The Addams Family at Hereford Community Theatre. Away from the stage, Katelyn will be starting her first year as an elementary music teacher after recently earning a BS in Music Education from Towson University. She would like to thank her family, friends, students, and the production team for their support!

Carly Greaver

Karly Horn

Karly is very excited to be making her Cockpit in Court debut. Karly grew up doing theater in the Baltimore area, playing roles like Kathy Selden (Singin' in the Rain) and Kim MacAfee (Bye, Bye Birdie). At the University of Richmond, she performed with her student a cappella group and in the university choir. After recently moving back to Baltimore, she jumped back into performing at Phoenix Festival Theater, playing the Wardrobe in Beauty & the Beast. She would like to thank John, Becky, and Nathan for the opportunity to work with such an amazing cast.

Laura May

Laura is thrilled to return to Cockpit's stage with such a talented and fun cast! She has been performing in and around Baltimore since the late 80's...yes, it's been that long! Her favorite roles to date are Columbia in Rocky Horror, Anytime Annie in 42nd Street and a Silly Girl in Beauty and the Beast. When not on stage, Laura is a bookkeeper and dog Momma to the lovely Poptart. She would like to thank her Mom for always supporting her no matter what!

Leslie Perry

Leslie is so excited to be making her debut at Cockpit in Court in Something Rotten! She has been performing in musicals since the age of... , dancing and tumbling since she can remember, and teaching and choreographing since the age of 16. Some favorite performances include Cha Cha in Grease (PFT), Charity Angel in Anything Goes (CBT), Alice in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, most recently Sabor in Tarzan (PFT), and featured dancer in so many more! Choreography credits include Grease (PFT '22), Rock of Ages (MST), Beauty and the Beast (PFT), 9 to 5 (TIDEWATER), Heathers (TW), multiple children's and teen's summer theater programs. Leslie is a mom of four awesome kids and wife to one awesome guy. She is a regular at Limitless Fitness in Forest Hill as well as a returning Barre fitness instructor at Coppermine Bel Air. She is a skincare brand affiliate for NuSkin. And she loves baking, especially cookies. Have so much fun watching this hilarious musical!

Karey Kirkpatrick

Author

Karey Kirkpatrick began his career as a screen and songwriter for Disney Animation where he penned The Rescuers Down Under and James and the Giant Peach. With more than a dozen feature films produced, screenplay credits include Chicken Run (Golden Globe nomi­nee for Outstanding Comedy), Charlotte's Web, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, The Spiderwick Chronicles and Over the Hedge, which he also co-directed. He directed the Paramount Pictures film Imagine That starring Eddie Murphy and co-pro­duced, wrote and performed on the film's soundtrack. He recently directed the Warner Brothers animated musical SMALLFOOT for which he also co-wrote the screenplay and the songs (with brother Wayne). He has won a number of Tony, Oscar and Grammy awards and that number is zero. Other credits: husband of Nada, father of Sami, Maia and Finn.

Wayne Kirkpatrick

Wayne Kirkpatrick is the Grammy Award-winning songwriter of Change the World by Eric Clapton (Song of the Year). Top 10 singles include Every Heartbeat, Good for Me (Amy Grant); Wrapped Up in You (Garth Brooks); Boondocks, Bring It on Home, Little White Church (Little Big Town); Place in This World (Michael W. Smith). He is a multi-formatted song­writer with songs recorded by Bonnie Raitt, Faith Hill, Joe Cocker, Gabe Dixon, Trisha Yearwood, Babyface and Peter Frampton, among others. His songs have been featured in TV shows (Grey's Anatomy, True Blood, Hart of Dixie) as well as feature films (Almost Famous, Phenomenon, Smallfoot ). John O'Farrell

Author

John O'Farrell is one of the UK's best known comic authors and script writers. Best-selling novels include The Best a Man Can Get, May Contain Nuts and The Man Who Forgot His Wife. Non-fiction includes An Utterly Impartial History of Britain, the political memoir Things Can Only Get Better and its recent sequel plus three collections of his satirical columns for The Guardian newspaper. O'Farrell's books have been translated into thirty languages and adapted for BBC Radio and television. Winner, British Comedy Award. Previously a writer (and later panelist) on BBC's Have I Got News For You and lead writer on ten series of ITV's Spitting Image. Currently writing the sequel to Chicken Run, and adapting one of his novels for Sony International Pictures.

John Desmone

Director

John has staged over 100 full length productions that have appeared at many of the little, summer, college, and dinner theatres in the region. His shows have ranged in style from the intimate Tintypes and the sophisticated A Little Night Music to the hilarious Lend Me a Tenor and the classic West Side Story. Most recently, he directed critically acclaimed productions of Mamma Mia! and A Chorus Line for DCT, the community theatre in residence at CCBC Dundalk. He is thrilled to return to Cockpit were he previously directed Cole (’82), The Most Happy Fella – MPT’s production of the year in 1983, Noises Off (’87), Red, Hot & Cole (’00), High Society (’07), Charley’s Aunt (’09), and Hairspray (’11) and Gypsy (’13) – both of which were nominated for best production of the decade by Broadway World Baltimore in 2020. A recognized stage performer, John has appeared in over 50 featured roles ranging from King Arthur in Camelot and Sky Masterson in Guys and Dolls to Felix in The Odd Couple and George in Of Mice and Men. Here at Cockpit, John has appeared as Bill Sampson in Applause, as Beau in Mame, as John Adams in the 2002 production of 1776, as Caldwell B. Cladwell in Urinetown - the Musical, as Bela Zangler in Crazy for You, and as Christopher Belling in Curtains. TraceyAnn Tokar Smith

Stage Manager

TraceyAnn is thrilled to be stage managing Something Rotten! at Cockpit-definitely a show on her bucket list! Previously at CIC, TraceyAnn stage managed Night Watch, And Then There Were None, The Unexpected Guest, and Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean. She also stage manages for Dundalk Community Theatre, including their productions of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, A Bronx Tale, A Chorus Line, Intimate Apparel, Mamma Mia, Side Show, A Year with Frog and Toad, and The Bridges of Madison County. Her directing credits include Shadowlands at DCT, Three Tall Women at Cockpit and Court Summer Theatre, Rimers of Eldritch at McDaniel College, Arsenic and Old Lace at Vagabonds Theatre, and Billy Would Have Been Thirty Today for the Baltimore Playwrights’ Festival. Away from the theatre, TraceyAnn works as the Lead Teacher for Lansdowne High’s Distance Learning Program.

Nathan Scavilla

Music Director

Nathan is an engineer at Northrop Grumman by day, and an accomplished musician by night. He is the assistant conductor and keyboard programmer at Toby’s Dinner Theater in Columbia, MD. His music direction credits have been heard across many theaters in Maryland and DC. He would like to thank: John, and Becky for collaborating on this wonderful project. Catina and the musicians for bringing the score to life live every night. And finally Sara, and his parents for always supporting him in theatre, and in life.

Catina McLagan

Piano Conductor

Catina is thrilled to be back at Cockpit in Court with an amazingly talented cast and crew. She most recently associate music directed Falsettos at Rep Stage, and has frequently performed as a pit musician for Toby's Dinner Theatre, Dundalk Community Theatre, ArtsCentric, and Scottfield Theatre Company. Outside of musical theater she is a school instrumental music teacher in Howard County.

Becky Titelman

Choreographer

Becky has a BFA in Music Theatre from Elon University and has performed professionally all over the east coast, including Hershey Park, Wild Adventures Theme Park, Allenberry Playhouse, Seaside Music Theatre, and Main Street Theater. Some of her favorite past roles include Mame in Mame, Rizzo in Grease, Sheila in A Chorus Line, and Miss Hannigan in Annie. Since 2001, Becky has been teaching tap, jazz, and musical theatre for multiple dance studios and choreographing for competition teams. Becky’s tap and musical theater numbers have been seen in Harford Dance Theatre’s productions of Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Harriet’s Happiest Halloween, Snow White, Wizard of Oz, and the upcoming Cinderella. She also recently directed and choreographed A Chorus Line for Phoenix Festival Theater. In 2017, Becky started Scottfield Theatre Company with two colleagues, and she has choreographed their last nine productions. Becky is thrilled to be back at Cockpit! Her last performance here was in The Music Man with her dad, Bob Titelman, when she was ten! Becky would like to thank John Desmone for believing in her and inviting her to be a part of this incredible cast and crew. She has found a new theater home here and hopes to continue to come back for many years to come!

Sammy Jungwirth

Co-Scenic Designer

Sammy is an award winning 18-year-old theatre artist who has worked on over 150 theatrical productions in the Baltimore area. Though mostly a Scenic Designer, he also works in Lighting design, Sound design, props design and stage management for various companies and schools including Cockpit in Court, Vagabond Players, Silhouette Stages, Beth Tfiloh, Bowie Playhouse, John Carroll and more. He recently graduated from the Design & Production Magnet at G.W. Carver Center in Towson and serves as the Asst. Technical Director at the Children’s Playhouse of Maryland, where he performed for 10 years. He directed the US premiere of the West End musical Zelda a biographical musical about the tragic life of Zelda Fitzgerald that resulted in an upcoming 54 Below performance in New York. He is also the Co-founder of CJ PRODUCTIONS, a new production company based in Baltimore. Some of his other interests include screenwriting, drumming, graphic design and theatre journalism. 

Thomas P. Gardner

Lighting Designer

Thomas is a theatrical lighting designer and technical director based in Baltimore. Thomas has designed nearly sixty theatrical productions since 2016, including six here at Cockpit in Court. Other theaters he was worked with include: Phoenix Festival Theater, Single Carrot Theatre, Annapolis Summer Garden Theater, Tidewater Players, Fells Point Corner Theater, Silhouette Stages, Heritage Players, Stevenson University, Towson University, Jemicy Upper School, and Iron Crow Theatre where he is a resident artist. Thomas is currently the Lighting Director and Assistant Technical Director at Towson University. Toni Oliver

Sound Designer/Operator

After graduating CCBC in 2015, Toni (She/Her) moved on to running sound and lighting at Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament for three years. She has spent the past few months touring the country to set up and run effects for cheerleading competitions. Toni would like to thank her friends and family for encouraging her to continue her craft and for all of their support. It means the world.

Eva Grove

Eva has costumed several shows for Cockpit in Court including Sweet Charity, Night Watch, and And Then There Were None. Around the region, you may have also seen her work in shows such as Toward Zero, Avenue Q, Laughter on the 23rd Floor, Don’t Drink The Water, A Chorus Line, Catch Me If You Can, The Graduate, and The Bridges of Madison County, A Few Good Men, and The Full Monty.

Theresa Foggo

Theresa is a freelance artist with over 20 years of experience who has painted many murals throughout Maryland. She has a bachelor's degree in illustration and a master's degree in art education. This is Theresa's first time painting for Cockpit in Court and she is thankful for the opportunity to work with such an excellent creative team and hopes to have more opportunities to work with them in the future!
