Director’s Note
Joanne Centeno, Director
The year was 2017. I was sitting in my bedroom scrolling YouTube when I came across a Spring Awakening “Slime Tutorial” and like most teenage theater kids, I was forever changed by the raw and unfiltered storytelling the musical upheld. Spring Awakening tackles the exploration of adolescence and identity while covering themes such as suicide, abuse, teenage pregnancy, sexuality and the all encompassing sexual awakening- topics may be deemed taboo but are still incredibly relevant today.
When NCT invited me to return as the director for their Young Adult production of Spring Awakening, not only was I honored, but I was ecstatic to create a version of the show that blurred the lines of 1891 Germany and 2025 Bay Ridge, Brooklyn to prove the show’s relevance.
It has been a privilege getting to work with an incredibly talented cast who is brilliantly bringing this show to life on the NCT stage! I would like to give the biggest thank you my phenomenal creative team: music director Josh Eiger, choreographer Timothy Mayrose, and amazing stage manager Taylor Neilson for all their outstanding talent and hard work. They are what made this production possible.
Lastly, I like to thank my family for their endless support and always giving me so many reason to be happy.
Enjoy the show!
Joanne <3
