Director's Notes
Spring Awakening is an electrifying journey through the trials and challenges of adolescence, with music by Duncan Sheik. Winner of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical. This story explores the mystery of attraction, desire, sex, insecurity, the highs and lows of navigating/understanding the pressures of young adult life.
Although Spring Awakening may take place in 18th-century Germany, its subject matter is more relevant than ever. We live in a time where people are actively being attacked and are actively having rights restricted because of who they are. Women’s autonomy and access to healthcare are being taken away. Abusers of sexual assault are often not held accountable and queer communities are being unjustly slandered. Spring Awakening is a show that is meant to challenge you. Sometimes, to make the world better, we must take a hard look at the darkest parts of it.
This show means a lot to me and I hope it will find those caverns in your brain that expose you to thoughts of being a parent, a child, a someone who has experienced similar trauma, ecstasy or simply as an onlooker into uncomfortable moments that occur throughout our lives. We have all been someone’s child at one point in time. Some of us have children now. The dichotomy between parent and child is significant and as a parent myself, this show helps me remember how important truth, communication and empathy are. I have benefited from working on this show because it makes me mindful of the relationship and inherent power balance between adults and children. If I can “turn the dial down” on my ego and spend more time being honest and caring and curious with my children, then the trauma depicted in this show could possibly be mitigated.
This show represents a group of passionate people willing to take a risk, work hard and pursue the challenge of doing something new. Be curious with us! Be curious and without fear. Be present and enjoy our experiment. We love that you are here and truly hope that you will leave with something that resonates for some time. If you are impacted by the show (in a positive or negative or any other way) please email me to discuss artisticdirector@snapproductions.com. As artists, we look forward always and challenge ourselves daily, to see life and experience the best and the worst it has to offer.
Yours,
Joey Hartshorn
