Director’s Note for Sunday in the Park with George

Welcome, and thank you for joining us for Sunday in the Park with George.

Forty years ago, I had the unforgettable experience of seeing this show during its original Broadway run. Sondheim and Lapine didn’t just tell a story—they painted one. That performance opened my eyes to how theatre can be both intellectually rich and emotionally powerful. It changed how I see art, creativity, and the sacrifices we make for beauty.

In 2001, I had the honor of playing Dot and Marie at the Lyric Stage Company in Boston. Living inside those characters—so deeply connected to the act of creation—was one of the most meaningful moments of my artistic life.

Thank you to Ted Mitchell for allowing me to bring this show to life. It has been a journey filled with color, complexity, and connection. This story highlights the beauty, cost, and necessity of creation, with Ted, Tina, Abby and the entire Norton Singers team involved in every step of its success.

I am profoundly grateful to our extraordinary cast who every time I said, “Trust me, this works in my head”, they did just that - your talent, dedication, and heart have filled every rehearsal with discovery and joy. And don’t even get me started on the irresistible Nick Wilson snacks!

To our designers - thank you for painting this world with light, sound, and imagination. To our musicians, thank you for breathing life into Sondheim’s intricate and emotional score.

To our audience: thank you for being here. I hope you leave tonight with a renewed appreciation for the courage it takes to create—and the beauty that can emerge when we do.

Jennifer Glick

Dot

Jennifer Beth Glick is thrilled to be making her Norton Singers debut. Favorite roles at Company Theatre include Miss Honey in Matilda and Eponine in Les Miserables (IRNE Nomination). At Wheelock Family Theatre, Jennifer has been seen as Gertrude in Seussical (IRNE Award), Anne in Anne of Green Gables (IRNE Nomination) and Penny in Hairspray (Theatre World Nomination). She also played the title role in Norwood Theatre’s production of Peter Pan. At 11, Jennifer made her professional debut in the pre-Broadway production of Annie 2 at the Kennedy Center. After college, she joined the National Tour of Fiddler on the Roof starring Theodore Bikel. A graduate of Harvard and UVA Law, Jennifer is the self-appointed CEO of the Schaffer family. Endless love to Ryan, Charlie, Jillianne, Mum and Dad.

Athan Mantalos

Athan is thrilled to be making his Norton Singers debut. His past credits include: Night of January 16th (John Graham Whitfiled), Titanic (J. Sara Seals

Yvonne / Naomi Eisen

Sara is excited to be making her Norton Singers debut in this incredible show. Favorite shows include: Godspell (“Bless the Lord” soloist), RENT (Joanne) and Les Misérables (Factory Girl/Ensemble) at The Company Theatre in Norwell, MA. Sara just completed her 21st year as a music educator and has been the vocal music director at Bishop Feehan for the last 8 years, where she conducts several ensembles and is the music director for the Bishop Feehan Theatre Company. To Brandon, Molly & Hannah: “Thank you for being so supportive these last few months – I love you!”

Maren Phifer

Louise

Maren is excited to join this amazing cast for her first show with the Norton Singers. Her recent credits include: A Christmas Carol (Nell Cratchit), Finding Nemo Jr. (Nemo), Gypsy, A Musical Fable (Baby June) and Matilda the Musical (Matilda). Maren is a fifth grader at the Deer Hill School in Cohasset. She also loves to dance and has been studying ballet since the age of two at the South Shore Ballet Theater, and Project 31 Dance Studio. She would like to thank her two big brothers and little sister for always putting up with her singing around the house, and her parents for all their love and support.

Rachel Fisher-Parkman

Old Lady / Marie

Rachel has been lucky enough to appear in past NS shows with each of her sons, but Sunday marks the first time all three will tread the boards together; she is filled with gratitude for the opportunity. “There are only two worthwhile things to leave behind when you depart this world of ours: Children and art.” (She thanks her husband, Ted, for enabling both.) When not on stage with them, she’s likely still hanging out with the Parkmen, whether in the kitchen, at the piano, or on the disc golf course. Allyson Lynch

Nurse / Harriet Pawling

Allyson is thrilled to join Norton Singers for this Sondheim masterpiece! Equally at home in classical and musical theater styles, she has sung as the Soprano Soloist in CPE Bach’s Magnificat and Brahms Requiem with Pilgrim Festival Chorus, and on recordings for several of Steven Bergman’s original songs for release with Dreamworld Productions. Recent musical theater credits include Jekyll & Hyde at Norwood Theater, Joseph… Dreamcoat and Beauty and the Beast (Madame de la Grande Bouche) with New Bedford Festival Theater, and Sweeney Todd (Beggar Woman u/s) at Company Theatre. Alyse Clinton

Alyse is a graduate of Northeastern University with degrees in Theatre and ASL/English Interpretation. They work at The Learning Center for the Deaf as an aide for DeafDisabled elementary school students. Additionally, they are an open captioner, stage manager, actor, and teaching artist in the Boston area. Recent credits include How I Learned to Drive (Female Greek Chorus), The Winter’s Tale (Florizel), The Wolves (#11), As U Like It (Jacques), Hair (Black Boys Trio), Jonathan (Tom/Ensemble), SWAN (Aiden), Proof (Catherine), Joseph (Naphtali/Baker), Ellen’s Boys (Tina), Bedroom Farce (Kate), Complete Works Abridged (Jess Track), and Cabaret (Fritzie). Em Bergman

Celeste #2 / Elaine

Em was recently seen in Cabaret as a KitKat girl (Cohasset Drama Club) and in Hair (Company Theatre) as a tribe member. Favorite roles include Hot Blades Harry in Urinetown and Pseudolus in A Funny Thing…Forum. Em directed and choreographed productions at Rockland High School (SpongeBob the Musical, Mamma Mia, The Addams Family & Shrek) as well as choreographed for Silver Lake RHS (Urinetown, Footloose & Little Mermaid). By day, she works as a Performing Arts and Humanities teacher at MAP Academy in Plymouth and attended both Baldwin Wallace Conservatory of Music and Bridgewater State University. Jake Parkman

Jake is so excited to be a part of this production of Sunday with such a talented cast. He’s loving sharing the stage with his brother, Nate, and mom, Rachel, because they certainly don’t spend enough time together at home! Jake is happy to be back on stage performing and thanks the whole cast and crew for such a great experience.

Gary Ryan

Franz / Dennis

Gary is a lifetime MA resident who has recently moved south of the Charles, so is happy to be joining Norton Singers for the first time. He was most recently seen as Johnny in “Curtains” at Weston Friendly Society. A huge Sondheim fan, other favorite roles include the Baker in “Into the Woods,” Frid/Mr. Lindquist in “A Little Night Music,” and Peter in “Company.” Love to Tom, and happy b-day Molly!

Dru Daniels

Frieda / Betty / Dot Understudy

Awarded Best Supporting Performer in a Musical (non-professional) for the 2023 Boston Broadway Awards for her role as Lily in The Secret Garden at The Company Theatre, Dru Daniels is a full lyric soprano with a passion for musical theatre. Most recently seen as Marie, the Fairy Godmother in Cinderella (Norwood Theater and Company Theatre), Madame de la Grande Bouche in Beauty & the Beast (Rochester Opera House), Dru has also enjoyed playing Sibella in A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, Johanna in Sweeney Todd, and Nanette/St. Catherine in Born to Do This at The Company Theatre. During spooky season, she enjoys scaring children with her portrayal as Winnie in the Hocus Pocus Spooktacular at Southwick Zoo. She is thrilled to be making her Norton Singers debut! Nicholas Wilson

Boatman / Charles Redmond

Nick is thrilled to be joining the cast of Norton Singers. After years away from theater, Nick most recently played Sebastian in Cinderella at Norwood Theater and was inspired again. When not on stage you can find Nick leading worship at Encounter Church in Dedham or cooking in the kitchen as a professional chef and teacher. Nick would like to thank his wife Jordan and 4 kids (Skylar, Honor, Asa and Woody) for letting him have so much time out of the house while pursuing his dreams and “Putting it Together.”

Thomas Ostrowski

Louis / Alex

Tom is happy to be joining Norton Singers for the first time in Sunday in the Park with George. The energy and passion the creative team and actors have brought to the whole process is infectious. Past roles include Motel / Perchik in Fiddler on the Roof, Lumiere in Beauty and the Beast, Archibald Craven / Neville Craven in the Secret Garden, Officer Pitman in Titanic, Marco Palmieri in The Gondoliers, Algernon Moncrieff in The Importance of Being Earnest and Officer O’Hara in Arsenic and Old Lace. Special thanks to Lynne and Andy, to my family and all my love to Sarah.

Brian McCann

Mr. / Lee Randolph

Brian recently returned to the stage in the Little Theatre of Fall River’s Baby after a 15-year hiatus. Career highlights include Cabaret (Emcee), Guys And Dolls (Nathan Detroit), 1776 (Richard Henry Lee), Jesus Christ Superstar (Herod), Falsettos (Mendel), Joesph…Dreamcoat (Potiphar), The Nerd (Rick Steadman), Mass Appeal (Mark Dolson), and Death of a Salesman (Happy). He has directed Company, The Shadow Box, Closer Than Ever, and Love Letters. An award-winning high school principal and “snow day” video enthusiast, Brian thanks Maryann, Steve, his wife Kathy, their three children, and Uncle Richard for support and encouragement.

Katherine Light

Mrs. / Blair Daniels

In Katherine’s opinion, playing Mrs. and Blair Daniels is better than pastries. Recent credits include M’Lynn (Steel Magnolias) at Riverside Theatre, Maggie Dalton (Into the Breeches) with Walpole Footlighters, Titania/Hippolyta (A Midsummer Night’s Dream) and Mistress Overdone (Measure for Measure) at Mass Arts Center. Norton Singers roles include Jane Throttle (The Mystery of Edwin Drood), Herb (Godspell), and ensemble in Chess: The Musical, Jekyll & Hyde, and Oliver. Katherine has a BFA in Theater Performance from University of Cincinnati, CCM. Thank you to Maryann, Steve and this amazing cast and crew for bringing these connections to life.

Abigail Bradie

Singing Ensemble

Abigail is gathering up her bustle to take another Victorian adventure with the Norton Singers after playing Rosa Bud in their production of “The Mystery of Edwin Drood.” In addition to several other musical revues with the Singers, some of her favorite previous roles include the title role in “Mary Poppins”, Luisa in “The Fantasticks”, Ginger Grant in “Gilligan’s Island, The Musical”, Mary Hatch Bailey in “It’s a Wonderful Life: Live Radio Play”, and Elizabeth in “Angel Street (Gaslight)” for which she won an EMACT DASH Award. Love to the cast, crew, and my family for sharing their Sundays and supporting the art of making art.

Angela Maloney

Singing Ensemble

Angela is thrilled to be part of Sunday in the Park with George. She was most recently seen as Jack’s Mother in Into the Woods, Effy in The Spitfire Grille, and has performed in The Drowsy Chaperone and The Gay Marriage Plays. A graduate of Bridgewater State University with degrees in Music and Psychology, Angela has also sung twice in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade as part of the Macy’s Singing Christmas Tree. She is deeply grateful to be working alongside such a talented cast and to continue sharing her love of music and theater with others.

Beata Schmid

Singing Ensemble

Beata is recently retired from a job that had her traveling around the world, Beata is happy to finally pursue her passion for singing and musicals. A big thank you to Maryann, Steve, Ted, and the whole cast and the amazing stage managers. Art isn’t easy!

Joe Burke

Singing Ensemble / George Understudy

Joe is returning for their second show with Norton Singers. They were previously seen as Man 2 in Songs For a New World in 2023. They daylight as an online high school Spanish teacher, overseeing approximately two hundred students statewide. Some of their favorite previous roles include Jack in Into the Woods with Stadium Theatre in Woonsocket, RI, and Laurie in Little Women with Enter Stage Left in Hopkinton.

Karlie Fitzgerald

Singing Ensemble

Karlie is delighted to make her debut with Norton Singers! She recently returned to the stage after a much-too-long break, appearing in The Concord Players’ The Music Man, Needham Community Theatre’s Fiddler on the Roof, and Case Drama Boosters’ Spring Awakening. Other past credits include 42nd Street, Anything Goes, and The Drowsy Chaperone. When not onstage, Karlie enjoys snuggling her Boston terrier, Copley, and listening to Taylor Swift.

Kevin Fortin

Singing Ensemble

Kevin is very excited to be joining Norton Singers for this production. This is his first time on stage in almost 6 years and he’s enjoyed every second of it! Some favorite past roles of his have been Jack (Into the Woods), Seymour (Little Shop of Horrors), Moonface (Anything Goes), and Chip (25th Annual... Spelling Bee). Thanks to Maryann and Steve for the opportunity to be a part of this incredible show, and thanks to the rest of the cast for a great time on stage and off!

Marcia Desmarais

Singing Ensemble

Marcia Desmarais has been a member of Norton Singers since 1968. She has shared the stage with her mother, both sisters, her late husband Paul and her two children Christian and Vanessa. She is a former officer and current board member. Marcia is also a long-time member of the former Chaminade Opera group and Cranberry Coast Chorale. Happy to be back on stage and making new friends.

Myra Schwartz

Singing Ensemble

Myra has been a member of the Norton Singers since 2002 and has been in almost every show since then- her favorite being Les Misérables! She is on the board and enjoys working with this group very much. She has performed with the Pawtucket Community Players, MMAS, Neponset Choral Society, and the Serenading Seniors. A retired nurse educator, she enjoys doing volunteer work for the Board of Health, swimming, and reading!

Nate Parkman

Singing Ensemble

Nate is so happy to be back onstage with the Norton Singers after having directed “25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” in 2023. This production of “Sunday” marks the first time he has shared the stage with both his mother and brother, aside from the famed Parkman Car Karaoke productions. When he isn’t performing, you can find Nate all over the country playing competitive disc golf!

Peter Turner

Singing Ensemble

Pete has been in the ensemble for most of the Norton Singers productions. He tries out specifically for ensemble because that’s where the fun is. Pete also enjoys being involved in the other aspects of a true community theatre, such as set construction and sound.

Ted Koban

Singing Ensemble

This could possibly be Ted’s 32nd show. He can’t really recall. He started out as a door guard in the Sudbury Savoyard’s production of the Gilbert and Sullivan’s Iolante, 27 years ago at the suggestion of his wife. He had one line. He was told he had some talent. He performed in (6) other more significant G&S roles. Since then, he has performed character roles with the Norton Singers (6), Mansfield Music and Art (5) and with several other companies. This is his first Sondheim show. It’s a been a long desire to do Sondheim. This show has been a blast. Best of luck to all.

Maryann Zschau

Director

Maryann is beyond excited to have directed this amazing show. She has directed a myriad of productions that include Steel Magnolias (Riverside Theatre Works), Chicago (Vokes Theatre), The Pajama Game & Fiddler on the Roof (Weston Friendly), A Little Night Music (Metro Stage), Nunsense & Dracula (Company Theatre) as well as countless high school musicals and corporate presentations for Fidelity Investments and various Healthcare organizations. Maryann is also an active Boston-area performer and her credits include National tour: Nunsense (w/Georgia Engel), Boston Companies: Menopause the Musical and Nunsense. Selected area roles: Mamma Mia (Rosie) w/ Norwood Theatre, Cabaret (Fraulein Schneider) w/ Moonbox Productions, Chicago (Mama Morton), & Mame (Vera) w/ Lee Meriwether at Reagle Music Theatre; Urinetown (Pennywise), & Dirty Blonde (Mae West) at Lyric Stage Company; Les Miserables (Mme Thenadier) at Company Theatre; Gypsy (Mama Rose) & Sweeney Todd (Mrs. Lovett) at Publick Theatre. Concert appearances: Follies (Phyllis) w/ Len Cariou & Songs for a New World w/ Jason Robert Brown. She is a 3-time Independent Reviewers of New England (IRNE) award recipient for Best Actress for Thoroughly Modern Millie (Mrs. Meers), A Little Night Music (Desiree), and Sunday in the Park with George (Dot). Maryann is a Boston College graduate and serves as the Senior Development Officer for Special Events at the South Shore Health Foundation, where her work concentrates on fundraising for their signature events. Special thanks to Ted Mitchell and the hiring team at Norton Singers for taking a chance on me. I am forever grateful to have had the chance to create “moments of magic” with these incredible artists. As always, love to the little fam!

Steven Bergman

Tina-Marie joined Norton Singers in 2011 and is an active board member. Appearing on stage only a handful of times, she utilizes her talents best behind the scenes as stage manager. It has been an absolute pleasure working with this amazing cast. She would like to thank her daughter for her endless love and support!

Abby is pleased to be behind the stage as assistant stage manager for this amazing show! She has been with the Norton Singers since 2011.
