"All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players:
They have their exits and their entrances,
And one man in his time plays many parts."-William Shakespeare
As You Like It
Good evening, and welcome to the Bishop Dunne Drama Program's 2023 Spring show, The Book of Will! We are so excited and blessed to have you all with us tonight.
We all know the name William Shakespeare. When we discuss literature's finest, his name is always at the top of the list. What you might not know is that we almost lost over half of the bard's plays. In Shakespeare's time, rights to a work went to the first person who published them, and many greedy publishers printed poorly transcribed versions of classics like Hamlet. Still other plays, like Antony and Cleopatra, As You Like It, and even Macbeth, remained totally unpublished and almost disappeared into the annals of history. But thanks to the dedicated work of two of Shakespeare's closest friends, John Heminges and Henry Condell, these masterpieces survived. Over the course of several years, these two men and their family and friends collected 36 of Shakespeare's plays into what we now know as the First Folio.
The show you are about to watch chronicles the storied production of that book: the tribulations, the successes, and everything in between. It is a story about sacrifice, dedication, and above all, a profound love for the art of drama. We hope you enjoy our production of The Book of Will!
